I posted this many times. A Dremel Tool with a scrubber wheel will take off all of the layers of Chrome, Copper and down to bare brass without leaving large scratches. You will need to follow it up with jewelers rouge and a buffing wheel to get a mirror finish. Sandpaper will take MUCH longer.

What if I want to remove the shiny-ness from parts (or all) of a mod? I want to keep the color of the plating intact but give it a "brushed look" finish. I don't even know what search terms to use. I've got a generic dremel tool and bunch of parts that I don't know the names of.
