
I've noticed on my sweet flavors, all of them are bumped up in flavor with the addition of sweetener. Since the tongue only picks up sweet, salty, bitter, sour & unami, I'm thinking maybe the sweetener acts like a carrier or enhancer of the other flavors to the tongue.
So the idea that went through my head was whether or not savory flavors such as bacon, pizza, McRib (yes, I saw this somewhere) maybe buttered popcorn could be made more flavorful with the addition of a salt factor. Admittedly, I haven't tried any of these savory flavors, but ....
All of this makes me think of the candy in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory that tasted like a meal.
