Scubagen v3 - need advice

I just bought a used Scubagen v3 and had a Line v2 before that which I love. I am not impressed so far with the scubagen yet. I have a few questions..

1. I changes the mesg and wire 5 time in the past 5 days thinking I would get better flavor than my Line v2. 3 out of the 5 times I got flames ( very scary). I followed scubabatdan's video. But I thiink I am doing something wrong. Is this normal?

2. scabatdan's U shape mesh looks great but I can't for the life of me to get it curved son evenly.

3. My kantal wire glows red from the post to the coil but the coil does not glow. Is this normal?

I really want this to work but I am getting frustrated. Please help.

Your wick is way too high above the post making the leads from the coil to the post to long hence the glowing. Get the arc of the wick closer to the post and keep the span from coil to post as short as possible.

If you cut the mesh at a 45 degree direction to the weave you'll be able to bend the wick a lot easier without kinking it. The way you've got it now would work if you used non-resistance wire for legs on the coil. If you watch this guy make a coil for an Odysseus you'll see what I'm talking about. I've used 28ga silver wire I got at Hobby Lobby in the jewelry making section.

I just got a V3 too and I didn't even bother with the U shape. First thing I did was tear it apart. Built it more like a genesis or a Zen. and it works great.

Another way to make your wick is roll the mesh around a personal headphone wire, bend it, then pull the wire out before heating the wick

I only oxidise the top section, others the whole wick
