GlaxoSmithKline is feeling the heat from the rapid growth in electronic cigarettes, with enthusiasm for the nicotine delivery devices dampening sales of the British drugmaker's patches and gum, its chief executive said.

In an interview with Reuters, Andrew Witty also said he and his team had spent "a few days" exploring whether the drugmaker should compete directly by becoming an e-cigarette maker, but had swiftly decided against it.

"We've decided we're not going to play. We've consciously had a think about it but we're not going to play," Witty said.

Witty said e-cigarettes were "just too controversial" for GSK to want to get involved in at this stage, adding that "there's not enough data," to provide robust evidence of the products' risks and benefits.

He didn't add that GSK and the rest of BP are the main reason that they are "controversial". More FUD.

No wonder the ANTZ are railing against, and are trying to get laws passed regulating e-cigs to the point of a de facto ban. We're cutting into BP's precious profits.
vaping is controversial because it's cutting into tax revenues. In Michigan, where I live, the cigarette tax is $2 a pack. In 2012 that raised $900 million which is also 4% of total tax revenues. There would be significant pain if that disappeared. Today the republican governor said vaping should be regulated the same as tobaco. It was foolish of him to say that at this point in the debate.

BP will survive e-cigarettes killing their $3-4 billion NRT and pill market, they will also survive the slow decline in the $50-90 billion market for smoking related disease drugs. BG not so well, they have budgeted for massive tax and MSA money and some are already feeling the effect in their bottom line.

I still have patches, Wellbutrin and Chantix in the cabinet. I want a refund so I can buy stuff that works.
