Really curious if this is an authentic IMR battery. Looks more like I would expect other li-ion chemistries to behave. I'm not calling bull. I'm genuinely curious. Compared to this video with short circuit testing of AW and Panasonic, it looks like a completely different beast.

I would love to see more tests of how our preferred batteries behave when shorted. If anyone got some; please share. :)

Yeah that's what I thought at first, kind of weird for an IMR.
Assuming this video is real, the most interesting thing is that the battery exploded in open air. That means holes in the mod aren't going to save you.
Hmm.. maybe the heat sort of welded the vents on the battery shut and then it exploded? That or the venting on the battery just isn't enough for the amount of gas that is trying to escape.

A battery exploding, qhen in prior tests it didnt, is what is known as real life.
Any time you exceed specs, all bets are off.
Sure vents are supposed to prevent explosions. Then, when it happens, debris clogs the vents, for example. What happens then?
Real life.
I work in the field, and it always amuses me when research lab rats say "That shouldnt happen"
And they never learn.
Folks, just beceause someone tested a battery to destruction 5 or 10 times without a serious reaction, it doesnt mean that a violent reaction cannot occur.
Even if this video is fake, I have always felt that yhe blase attitude some display towards uncontrolled discharge is dangerous and ill informed.
And I say this while being iffy about the authenticity of this video.

Basically, a runaway 26650 is trying to vent the chemical reaction from a larger quantity of chemicals through the same size vent in the top of the battery as a smaller battery. That certainly has the potential to build more pressure so what one sees on the video doesn't seem to be particularly inconsistent with that set of facts. That said, it would be helpful to see the experiment replicated by a trusted source as well as seeing what happens if a 26650 goes south in a 26650 mod with what one might expect to be adequate ventilation.
