interesting about the juice not darkening with the fill hole plugged. I always assumed that it was from tilting and that some of the juice from the coil came back down into the tank. this juice darkening is my only complaint about gennys. I wonder if its a combination of both the silica and fill hole plugged? i have often tried to plug the fill hole and never seen much of a difference in the vape so i just left it un plugged so i don't have to keep screwing & unscrewing the screw everytime i fill, but now i will plug to see if it actually helps with the darkening. you doing ok edo?

Hey Vapdivrr...all is great here...long time no talk. Even with ss mesh I found that when I plugged my fill hole....the juice wouldn't get too much darker. Again I have juices that would get ridiculously dark with ss mesh and the fill hole open but with the fill hole closed it would get maybe 5 shades darker. But with the silica it doesn't get daker at all.... the last drop in the tank tastes as fresh as the first. So if you can vape with the fill hole plugged there is a definite advantage. I also like that my gennies are totally leak proof now. Just so you know my silica wicks are short (1cm in the tank) and I tilt when I vape so YMMV.

As I said in another thread, I'm curious now. I've used nothing but ss mesh for probably a year. I haven't made a soft wick in ages. I'll have to dig out some silica and see what happens.

It's working and wicking awesome in a DID.. I dug out an old did clone and tried it but it's not wicking too well.. so you probably need something with a large wick hole. In the DID, I have two strands going down into the juice, in the clone, I cut one of the strands off and just have one going down into the juice. I wish I could put the fill screw in and not tell a difference, but I can :( It's not leakproof.. yesterday I laid it on it side and forgot about it and yes, it leaked out through the air hole :glare:

As I said earlier, I got curious. This morning I was vaping away on my Bliss, on a Provari; and decided it was due for a rebuild. The Bliss has never been my favorite RBA to set up, Genny style, because of the relatively small platform.
So I took the old mesh wick and coil out, found a piece of silica, wrapped a coil on it with 30ga, looped the silica into a U and inserted it in the two wick holes, hooked up the coil, and checked it out at 1.5 ohms. The whole process didn't take more than 5 minutes.
I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Nothing fancy. Just a horseshoe wick, with a single coil.

Well the DID has a very large wick hole....so maybe having two strands going into the wick hole will work better. I have tried the silica wicks in my Cobra, DUDs and AGA-T....and they become totally leak proof when plugging the fill hole. Did you try just having two strands going into the tank and also plugging the wick hole? I don't notice any difference in wicking with the fill hole closed vs open in my silica builds....but I tilt when vaping so maybe thats why.

Yep... tilting did the trick! I took the top cap off and screwed in the fill hole screw.. then laid it on it's side with the wick facing down. I left it like that for a little while and nothing came out. I put the top cap back on and have been vaping it while tilting and it's working just as well as it did while not tilting with the fill hole unplugged. This is great! For one thing, I've been having problems vaping in bed. I like to read or watch TV in bed and it's hard to vape while reclining like that (or even in my recliner in the living room for that matter) because the position causes over wicking. With the fill hole plugged, I can vape in a reclining position and not have juice in my mouth.. I can take it out and about and not worry about leaking (I just have to tilt). If I'm here at my desk, I can take the plug out and vape normal.

I never realized that the fill hole plug made that much difference in leaking (in a genesis) My RSST is horrible at leaking. It'll leaking in a second if it's on it's side. It's got mesh in it, I haven't tried silica in anything except this DID and the little clone (which doesn't wick)
I took the silicon fill hole plug that came with my RSST and plugged the hole and laid it on it's side with the wick facing downward and so far it's not leaking out at all either. But I put the cap back on and try to vape it with the plug in it and even with tilting, I'm getting dry hits. Oh well.. at least I can travel with it and not worry so much as long as the plug is in.

Anyway, thanks EDO for the suggestions! It works! :D

edit... yes, I have two strands going down into the wick hole in the DID. The little clone has a tiny wick hole and I could only get one strand down it but it's still not wicking very well. Not a problem as I don't use the clone, I was just experimenting on it.

Donnah....no problem glad to hear that you got the DID working with the fill hole plugged. You need some air getting into the tank so for example on my Cobra I use only one strand going into the tank because if I used two tails going into the tank it would plug the wick hole and I would get dry hits if I also plugged the fill hole. Since your DID has large wick hole, the two strands going into the tank works fine but not in the rsst. Try using a smaller diameter silica or use only one strand going into the tank with the rsst and let us know how it works out.

I ran out of ss mesh one day and gave some 3mm German double twist silica a go from rtd vapor and have not looked back since or even bothered to order any more ss mesh

right no i have moved from silica to cotton in my gennys and its proving to be even better than silica.

cotton wick in an agi with drilled out wick hole on a modified natural

the best part about this setup it that the agi has a drip well and dripper post so i set the coil up like a dripper and put the tail in the tank it wicks perfect as is but if i want to temparaly change flavor i just drip on the coil as i would with a normql drippere and boom new flavor for a wile. If i want that flavor to last longer i fill the drip well. Once it has vaped off the coil and wick start to draw from the tank again with no problem and th old flavor comes right back. Real nice
