So I DO have a wonderful member here who is sending me some rebuilding supplies. (Thanks! Robert)
but I am trying to not order more new coils and have a question.

After I clean them with hot water and let dry, the wick in general is clean and fluffy.

Except for the tips, those actually look like they are toasted. Yeah, they might
come cleaner with Everclear but I don't think the wick tips are Just gunky.

Would it help prolong them if I use a pair of fingernail clippers and clip just say 1/32 off the tip, the toasty
looking part?

Rebuilding is still at least a few days away.

I'm guessing you haven't taken off the chimney and seen how much gunk is still there. Washing helps a bit but it's not coming all the way out.

I've tried full rebuilding but it didn't work out well. I may try again but only because I think the potential for the ultimate flavor vape is there, it's not made for rebuilding with regular wire. Cotton rewicking is excellent, although lately I've had trouble removing old wicks, especially the original silica, and sometimes am rewicking before first use. Then I'm using them too long to be able to rewick them again.

    Rewick tips:
Pull out silica wick a few fibers at a time.
to clean the coil, dry burn (fan or outside) in pulses only to not burn the insulator. Remove quickly from battery and wash hot, dry and reburn.
Spend as long as necessary shaping the cotton, this is the hard part.
Use a smaller piece or 2 real small ones for flavor wick. If main wick is a bit fatter on one end, taper flavor wicks in opposite direction. The main purpose here is to fill the holes right. Inhibit or remove from battery while wicking because dry cotton will immediately catch fire.
Put on chimney and cut ends carefully. Best is flush cut wire cutters, new and clean. If the wicks are loose enough through the coil, any pull when cutting will dislodge them.
Remember the gasket, although I've left it off without leaking somehow.

    Bruce,

Click on my Avi, and then click on my blog entry counter. I have a couple other methods that I used to learn to rebuild my EVOD heads using cotton wicking. I use 30g wire, 8-9 wraps around a 1/16" drill bit and nail a 1.8 ohm coil just about every time.

Not sure what wicking material you are using, but if you ever try cotton or rayon (cellucotton) this is really easy....
