I’m a new vaper…

Obvious brainiac, look where you're posting

…and after 2 months of researching, vaping, and playing around with DIY stuff, I have more questions than I did after only a couple of weeks. I thought I had it all figured out until I saw this video…

You shouldn't have started writing this before you had the link to paste... ugh! You're an idiot!

…and, I started feeling sick. But that can still be marked up to just allergies.…

Yea sure

...The video explained about how VG and PG molecules were larger (I suppose larger than air and water…?) Anyway, it explained that that's one reason why one doesn’t need to worry about lungs filling up with fluid from vaping because since you're NOT vaping water or NS…

Except that you are. Just couldn't wait till all the facts were in! These people are going to mark you off as real nut-job, get tired of your questions and block you. That’s what’s going to happen! Mark my words.

… He said the molecules of vapor that comes off of them (PG and VG) are too large to cross the lung barrier and will simply blow out on the exhale.

So, here I am, getting really congested now (bronchials, I think - it's high in my chest, high-pitched and wheezy...and all-night for the past couple of nights). I remember the same kind of cough when I had whooping cough as a child.

And, trust me, you never forget that!

Please don't think I want an online diagnosis, I promise I don't. I just want a discussion because I feel like I'm wandering in the dark here with a loaded hammer and everything feels like a nail. Not sure I’ve made anything better and may have made an uninformed decision about vaping DW/NS thinking I was ‘fixing’ something. I just don't want to do anything more stupid by continuing, if, in fact, it was misinformed. I don't want to make myself sick or sicker just because I'm ignorant of basic bio-chemistry …

The real reason is your doctor already thinks you're a nut and you don't want to give her anymore fuel.

... and somewhat hardheaded.

Ha! Somewhat?!

I started mixing my own, replacing PG with half and half distilled water and normal saline…

Because you're easily excited with any new toy, can't wait to tinker with basically anything you get your hands on, have an almost impossible need to control your own environment and then there’s that immediate gratification thing. Don't get me started!

… thinking I was eliminating a potential and suspected irritant to my mouth and throat after a week or two of vaping. After watching that video, I'm concerned that I've shot myself in the foot and my theory, is basically full of holes

The word you're looking for is 'Sucks'.

Then there's the whole, PG has antiseptic or antibacterial properties that might even aid in keeping upper respiratory bug-a-boos...

Yep, that's my girl. Dazzle everyone with your grasp of the English language.

…down.

Anyone want to wade in?.... I don't want to quit …

Ha! Like that’s likely... You love it and you know it

… Really wish I could get clear answers on these questions though. I can always experiment and see what happens.

What’s new? I’m just surprised you’ve lived this long.

But, then there's these darned posters up at the pharmacy about the whole pneumococcal pneumonia thing that’s… well, just irritating!!.

Signed,

Confused, vaping and bewildered

okayyy... VG and PG molecules are about the same size as simple sugars or complex alcohols... the lungs prefer to adsorb molecules quickly in the O2 N2 CO CO2 Methanes H2SO4 sizes ( the last 2 on par with VG and PG sized molecules).. so trying to downsize your molecule parameters by going to water and saline really isnt going to help much... and besides, nic molecules are a tad larger than VG and PG.... so, if you are adsorbing nic via vaping, you are adsorbing PG and VG too. The vape "cloud" is due to VG/PG... if your doing water/saline, Im amazed if you are even getting a vapor cloud.
As far as PG being a deterrent to "bugs"... it is, and so is VG.... I used to get a cold 2 times a years like clockwork when I smoked... since I started vaping, I havent had a cold... and its been 3 yrs. Coincidence? Maybe... ( BTW I vape 100VG) maybe smoking caused the colds or... vaping has stifled them... no telling.

and also... vaping does not cause dehydration.... it may make your mouth feel dry, but so do salty pretzels ;)

Thank you Bunnykiller. You've attached some reasonable answers to my floating world of questions... I appreciate your time and expertise on this matter. I'm not going to attribute this world-class bug I'm wrestling with to my vaping (that's a relief!).

I am getting fair amounts of cloud from the 60% VG, 30% DW/NS, 10% flavor... Posting a photo of what I get with my mix and ~23 watts.

Thanks again, Blessed be.

Well, the original light bulb was to 'replace' the standard percentage of PG with a substitute that I thought would be less irritating to the lining of my throat and mouth. It was a starting place...
Although I personally use 30-35% PG and no water at all, I understand some people have a sensitivity to PG.

If you wish to avoid PG, there's no need to substitute as much water. Try using just enough to get the viscosity of your final mix reasonable. I think most people who do "PG free" liquids are in the 5-15% range.

And yes, by all means, experiment to find what works best for you personally. That's one of the best things about vaping; it's completely customizeable to a particular individual's needs and desires.

I use VG with VG-based nic, occasionally add a tad of flavor, and no other ingredients. I get loads of vapor and my equipment lasts longer than others have suggested. I use clearomizer type tanks and never have dry hits. But if I even *think* about using PG-based flavoring I get upper chest goopies with expected wheezing. So maybe, and I'm no guru, maybe you have a really bad sensitivity to PG.

Incidentally, I've removed PG as much as possible from the rest of my life and my skin is much happier. Good luck!

30% water (DW or NS) is way too much. Even if you decide to use VG only, do not exceed 15-17% water in your blend. What kind of saline are you using, BTW? The only saline that some of us are adding (just a drop or two, to balance flavors) is the .09 solution that Slots describes here:

What I use sometimes to "smooth" a juice out that's "harsh" on my throat.
In the First Aid section of the pharmacy, pick up some .9% Saline (Wound Wash/Flush).
It's used to clean out open wounds .. safe for a baby.
It's pure sterile water with .9% saline solution, and comes in a spray can.
It comes out of the can in a stream that is easy to direct into a dripper bottle.

I add about 1 drop per 2ml. to my juice.
It also brings out the flavor (just like salt does in cooking), ... but it smooth's out the harshness.. and blends the flavors together.
You will not taste any salt, as it's super mild.
There is also a saline solution you spray/inhale up your nose ..but that's the wrong one.
It has added ingredients.

You want the one without anything in it except the .09 saline and sterile water, that is used to clean wounds. It's cheap, and will last forever.
Have fun experimenting.

I use mostly 70PG/30VG blends as too much VG makes me heavy chested.

Propylene glycol in e cigarettes might keep us healthy, says researchers

YMMV, of course. But unless you have a real allergy to PG, there's no reason to eliminate it.

Good luck!

Katya, you weren't speaking to me, but you gave me food for thought. Thanks for the interesting reading, too.

The key here is you said "wheezy" and unless you have an allergy to pg (posible but rare for real allergy) the number one cause of that is high VG from my years reading this forum. I had those symptoms with VG at 50/50 and higher so I went to 70pg/30 vg and now at 80pg/20vg and no wheezing :) so try high pg and if that doesn't work high vg and maybe try using a lower power tank and minimize your juice intake (higher nic if you need it) and don't worry about clouds just go for flavor. My philosophy is listen to you your body it knows what it doesn't like. Also you have a voice in your head talking when you post lol:D

Thanks Jibbu, I'm not averse to going totally VG. I do so love my vapes {spreading smile}. Nice, big, puffy white clouds are fun, too. It's a strange thing, this upper respiratory wheezing, croupy cough. Since several in my crowd also have something similar, it's hard to determine if the small amount of PG I'm still allowing in my vapes is the cause. But, for sure, the best way to tell if it's PG would be to totally eliminate it and see if the wheezing croup goes away...

Thanks Katya... Yes I'm determined, if I'm nothing else...

Don't try to soft-soak it with these nice folks. You're stubborn as hell!

...and will work at the formula till I get it! :) Thanks
