i agree. they can help convey the spirit or sentiment.
people can and do take things other ways than they were originally intended.

language alone is tricky enough.
for example:

Smileys are very useful for me. Before I started using them people mistook the tone of what I was saying, and sometimes it caused people to get offended or other trouble. Now things are all better now that I use smileys Everyone gets along better with smileys, it's like pot for forums
