Smok Alien 220w Problem

Hello guys,

I am an absolute newbie at vaping, I just got my smok alien 220W a week ago and all went well till today. I bought some coils off the internet, V8-T8 same as the old ones and after I changed the original one something went wrong.
It started with reading the wrong amount of Ohms. I know it should be 0.15 but at first it read 0.14 then after I unscrewed it and put it back together it read 0.45. Two more tries and now it's 0.151. The problem is,when I first start to inhale it feels like I am just inhaling air, no vapor. Then after 1, 1.5 seconds it starts to heat the juice and I start feeling the flavour. I tried different Wattage but nothing. I bought a 5 pack of coils and tried 2 of them but the problem didn't go away.
Do you guys have any idea what is the problem?

Firstly welcome to ecf !
Secondly the fact your coils don't have the exact 0hms that's written on them is completely normal most times they will change over time but 9/10 times the coil is gonna have a slight difference (ie : being .14 instead of .15)
The wattage you use has to be in the coil's range to work properly otherwise it's gonna take longer to heat the coil and therefore produce vapor.

TLDR : by reading your problem it dosen't seem like there's any problem and you're probably more scared than you should tbh
The only time you should be aware is if you use let's say a .5 coil and it reads at 1 0hm that aint normal but coils will always have a little difference which dosen't change anything just use the coils in the wattage range described on the coil themselves and you'll be fine.

Maybe I am overreacting a little. I used to vape at 60W/Normal with the old coil and it was amazing. Now with this one I am at 65 and the split second where I inhale just air is so frustrating. Maybe I got a bad batch of coils, or I screwed up something when I changed the coil.
Anyway, I am very glad I found this community, I want to learn as much as I can from you guys!

I have no idea what coil you're using or if the wattage you're using is within it's recomended settings but i'm sure you're doing that right, on the other hand @bsidb does have a point i too exhale a bit to let the coil warm up then inhale.
In case you start to gurgle and stuff know that this too is kinda normal and not really dangerous (can lead to annoying things but no explosion ahah ) that would mainly be you not inhaling at the right speed (higher the watts the faster you have to inhale since you produce more vapor).

Coils have a break in period, IMO. The ohms variance is normal, but as your coil gets used, you *may* find it heats faster. If you really prime it well, while slowly upping your wattage, that may help. Are you using the same juice/PG/VG mix?

Hello @stols001 !

Actually I have changed the e-juice, do you think this may be it? It's still 3mg nicotine 50/50 PG.
As you can tell, I am not an English native, so I may have not expressed myself properly.
The issue that I am having is that before changing the coil I could blow medium clouds with the same settings as I am using now. Now there's barely any vapor and I feel like I am inhaling mostly air.

I've been using the Smok T8 octuple coils exclusively for 6 weeks now. Agree slight variation in ohm reading from 0.15 is normal BUT 0.45 is not slight or normal. Using 4 bbb attys with 3 GX2/4's and have never seen a reading higher than 0.169 ohm for this coil.

Possible you purchased clone coils...

Also after priming these take extremely little "break in" like virtually zero maybe one or two puffs.

I think I may have purchased clone coils. I got them on ebay for 2 euros each, are they safe to use though?

IDK but from what you are experiencing I wouldn't trust them.

If you are using 50/50 juice and you had a higher VG/PG ratio before, then yes, that could be part of the problem. VG is much thicker than PG, so if that has substantially changed, you may need more wattage to blow the kind of thick vapor you were before, or you might want to try adding some VG (if you can obtain it where you are) to see if that helps with vapor. That said, diluting your new juice will reduce flavor, so you can try upping watts or a different PG/VG mix juice and see what happens.

It is entirely possible you didn't get manufacturer coils as well, but I've had that happen and gotten a dud box once, or one or two here and there. But, I've also had clone coils work just fine. So, I'm not sure.... But definitely test out your juice situation to see if that helps?

I got so frustrated that I digged up the old coil from my trash can. I know it sounds disgusting but when I changed it, voila, it was working perfectly. So the issue was from the new coils I bought!

Hi and welcome. Factory coils do tend to vary somewhat in both resistance and performance. Try hitting the button a second before you start to inhale.

I got so frustrated that I digged up the old coil from my trash can. I know it sounds disgusting but when I changed it, voila, it was working perfectly. So the issue was from the new coils I bought!

FYI take the old coil out and clean it by boiling in fresh clean water 5 minutes or so, change the water and repeat. Shake off excess water and reinstall, no need to let cotton dry. Reinstall and juice the atty. Take half dozen or so no power pulls. Then start with power 20w or so lower than normal and take a couple pulls, will likely still be zero vape as the ejuice continues to replace the water. Raise 5w and another couple pulls, should start to get some vape. Raise another 5w another couple pulls should be mostly vaping juice. Bring up to normal operating watts and good to go. Clean your coil this way every 1000-2000 pulls (sugary and custards/bakery juices and high vg more often) and greatly increase it's life span. I vape very barely sweet 50vg max tobacco juices and clean @2000.

I do that with my Nautilus coils, too, and I can attest for 1--2 cycles, it definitely works well. I don't boil mine, but we have the hot water heater set pretty high, so I just soak them for about 12 hours starting with very hot water, rinse, clean, then dry outside. I did not start out separating my coils, so now I have a "mystery" vat, never know if I'm going to get a 1.8 or a 0.7, since I like them both it's not a big deal. I imagine the resistance is printed on them somewhere, but I don't use my little old lady can't read Walgreens glasses enough yet....

Out of curiosity have you tried the .7 coils with high vg e-juice ? (like 70vg)
I've been thinking of reusing my nautilus for a better morning vape but only have high vg juices atm

I'm sensitive to PG when inhaled, so I use 100% VG. Sometimes diluted with a drop or two of H20 into the tank. Haven't had problems though when I use really sweet/dark juices (esp with the 1.8 coil) it gunks up very quickly. That said, with the 0.7, that coil usually lasts a week or so (though now that I DIY, I use a lot less flavoring than store bought) and the flavor is fantastic, too. But, I haven't had dry hits, problems wicking, anything like that. I do make sure to draw on my tank for a few seconds after I stop hitting the fire button a) to make sure I get all that lovely vape into my mouth and b) to make sure I'm wicking well for the next hit. On a Steampunk mod I vape the 1.8 coil at 8 watts, and the 0.7 at 10 watts (with airholes half closed). Have not had any issues, but the Nautilus 2 just seems to be a magic tank for me. But, I think you'd be just fine with 70%, and if you have it laying around, why not give it a shot?

I find with the coils for the TFV8 baby coils you need to hit the higher wattage value than what Smok lists on the side of it for the best range. Could just be me or the way I like to vape but using my Big Baby Beast.
