what ohms are you running with that build? is the mod getting hot or the atty....?
im running at 0.34ohms. the atty gets hot 1st then the heat gets transferred to the mod. im afraid to much heat buildup might ruin the mod. i tried to attached a heat sink insulator but the ohm just drops to between 0.03-0.01 when installed tgt with the atty. the insulator has an adjustable copper pin.

I was going to buy a Smok x Cube II but the guy who runs the Vape store said that they've had loads of problems with that box mod so i avoided it ;[ hope everything works out for you though.

I'd probably take it back to where you bought it because it doesn't sound right that the mod is getting hot. Perhaps its a fault of the batteries, which branding are you using?

I stay away from efest. They're re-wraps or seconds from name brands.

The Smoke X-Cube II has built-in thermal protection. If the board gets too hot it will shut down until the temperature drops to an acceptable level. Upgrade the firmware in your X-Cube, if you have not already done so. It will go up to 180W with revision 1.093. I had problems with a version of the firmware updater. Let me know if you encounter any and I'll send you a link to a working version. Back up your apps, and don't let Smok automatically update them. Version 2.5 for Android crashed on launch. My Android tablet would not run the app as it was not Bluetooth 4.0 capable. It would pair with the X-Cube, just not communicate. I spent $150CDN to get an iPhone 5s as a remote for it. I'm impressed with the electronics, and not so much with the firmware and apps. The case leaves something to be desired, as the firing bar is a pinch point on three of its sides, and sticks regularly. The device is very promising, but like much in the vaping world was rushed to release.

I'm running my derringer at 57w .34ohms. It doesn't get hot.
Are you chain vaping on it? The tank that came with mine, got really hot. I don't use tanks a lot, so the derringer works best for me :)

In my sub-ohm tank selection, I have a Starre tank, a Super Tank, and a Velocity. I run the Starre at about 35 watts, the Super Tank at around 40, and the Velocity at 50-60 watts. All three get hot with use. And sometimes that heat makes it to the mod. It's a fact of life. The metal base conducts the heat to the metal 510 connector. I don't feel my mods get hot, but they do get quite warm after a chain-vape session while the attys have a tendency to get too hot to touch. That heat has to go somewhere.
