From what I gather this is a good mod, I've had the version your speaking of with internal batteries an I've also owned it's bigger brother with external removable batteries and both are pretty decent. I think smok has gone downhill with their newer mods :( the alien performs so great but has too many issues!

For internal batteries I like my MVP4, has a 4500mah internal battery. I also have an istick power 5000mah internal battery but it tends to misfire. I've had less issues with innokin products than istick, I love my coolfire iv too. Have the 40w original version an the 100wtc version. The 100w is better just cos of the bigger battery an just even look much different to the original in size :)

80w is enough for most normal people.

...frankly, if it's a first kit, 30w is enough.

However, I wouldn't recommend Smok as a first kit to anybody. How reliable is it? What sort of tank is it (does it do MTL or just clouds for the clouds people)?

Early 2016 is not modern enough for a Smok product. That's back in the 'danger zone' of mods breaking in very short time.
(I know someone who had 7 in one year.... all replaced by a vendor who almost went bankrupt)...

So - No. Not really. Sorry about that.

So I'm new to vaping. My friend has a 150w box and I like the way it hits but I know I probably don't need that much power and I'm thinking of getting the smok micro one r80 80w starter kit to stop smoking cigs. Is this a good choice?
Welcome and glad you joined. Your young, go for it. I suspect you know the consequences, and are willing to pay ($) for it. The Kit is a starter kit for advanced vapors so chances are you have a friend who will hands on guide you. A Lambo or Ferrari will get you there in style but my old heap will accomplish the same without the style, expense, special knowledge (Eleaf Istick 40TC and a RDA).
