User error.

You should always turn the battery device off or go into "standby mode" when you put it in a purse or pocket or bag. (Usually 5 clicks on the fire button) If left on, the fire button can be inadvertantly pressed by objects in the bag. This may over-discharge the battery, causing it to overheat and go into failure

Regulated mods generally have a safety feature to prevent this, a self auto timer that makes the mod stop firing after 10 - 15 seconds. But that means it can be pressed again and start the process over again, eventually overdischarging the battery. I am probably biased, but I've seen a lot of issues of this type over the years with SMOK products.

I personally would retire that mod. Hard to tell what wire circuitry or board has been ruined. Expensive lesson learned here.

The tank may be salvagable. You would need to replace the old coil. You may also need to clean and soak the entire tank in isopropal alcohol, rinse well in water, and allow to air dry. Make sure to prime the new coil well with e-liquid prior to putting it in the tank.

I think Batitude is correct here. The mod is probably not salvageable and will need to be replaced, along with the batteries as it sounds like it began autofiring and protections either didn't kick in, or the mod was repeatedly auto-fired and eventually the battery became overheated and vented.

It is very important to turn off or lock a mod before placing it in a bag or purse as this CAN happen with any mod, electronics fail and protections are sometimes overridden.

I'm sorry to hear about it, but the important thing is that no one was hurt, which is what can happen when batteries vent while in use. This is why care and proper maintenance of batteries and equipment is very important.

I'd suggest starting to read some of the pinned threads (or use the search function) to learn more about battery safety and e-cigs generally, so that you understand your next mod (and batteries) better, as well as how to safely use and care for them.

Good luck and welcome to ECF.

Welcome and glad you joined.
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Vaping is still safer by far than smoking.

Welcome to ECF. Wish it were under better circumstances that we are meeting you two.
Just to help out the next guy, what device are you talking about?

I'm pretty sure that's a round mod built in battery with a 510 and a baby beast on top. I don't think the wattage is adjustable.

Still, melted and it's done. That is 99% an error in not locking it and tossing in a bag or pocket. Should have cut off, but as already pointed out, if you keep cycling it with something on the firing button you might still overheat the unit. It properly should not have done that but inexpensive electronics do act out at times.

You can always use the tank on a different mod if it is undamaged (although might need a new coil if that got toasty too).
