Trials are now getting underway for a product that looks like a cigarette, but contains a gel with 1.5mg of nicotine. A smoker sucks on the "cig" and consumes the gel. The company expects to market later this year.

Here's the Web site, and note the FDA approved clinical trial.

Very interesting -

Note this, from the FAQ: "the nicotine in Smoke-Break absorbs similarly in the body as does the nicotine in Nicorette® gum."

I take this to mean that the nicotine is absorbed through the mucosa membrane in the mouth, nose and throat as opposed to cigarette smoke and e-smoke which is absorbed primarily through the alveoli.

I wonder if that is the crucial point that satisfies the FDA and other regulatory bodies that a product is acceptable as NRT. It'll be interesting to see what happens when (if) the NextSaftety device is released, since it is designed to deliver atomized nicotine that can be absorbed by the lungs.
