I went to buy some more e-liquid today from DFW Vapor, and decided to check out their clearance section. I currently have a kayfun 3.1 clone, that is getting pretty old (The fill valve is leaking, and I am on my last taper tip to fill it with). Considering the taper tips that are needed to fill the kayfun are almost $20 on Amazon, I decided to try something different.
So in the clearance page on DFW I found this SMOKTech RSST (Rebuildable SS Tank) for only $7. After a quick search I found that it takes wire mesh instead of the silica wick I normally use. So I bought some 500 mesh wick for 25 cents. This will be my very fist wire mesh tank, and if anyone has any advice for building coils on this thing or what voltage/wattage settings to use with my Lavatube V2.5, I would very much appreciate it. I have 28 and 32 gauge spools of kanthal wire at home so hopefully one of those will work well with the mesh wick.

For starters, curse you! I followed the link and fell right down the rabbit hole :)

The RSST is a nice Genesis atty. I have 2 of 'em. It's not top of the line, though, and you're likely to find the flavor lacking a bit when compared to a Kayfun. No worries, though...

The first thing I would suggest is to do a search on YouTube for genesis build videos. See if you can't find someone teaching the Petar K. method. It's easiest.

In a nutshell, without video, you make a stainless steel mesh wick rolled up about the same diameter as the wick hole in the deck. A little smaller is better. Make sure that the mesh is properly torched. This can be done on a gas stove or with a lighter. I did go out and buy a torch, though... It's also very helpful if you bend one edge of the mesh over and crimp it down real good. That edge needs to be on the outside when the mesh is rolled up.

Next, find a screwdriver that matches the hole in the deck. Wind your coil around the screwdriver, and with the screwdriver still in place, install the coil. Remove the screwdriver, and install the wick.

Now comes the fun part... You've got to pulse the coil until there are no hotspots, and the coil glows from the center out.

Once that's accomplished, prime, fill, vape... oh, and start practicing the genny tilt (holding the mod and atomizer tilted upwards to help with the wicking).

Finally, you can - while you get good with torching and rolling your mesh - wick a coil with a piece of organic cotton yarn and use it for a while.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, for the reply. Lol today was the first time I ever looked at their clearance page. Considering I had to pay shipping for my normal supply of juice, the RBA for under $10 seemed like a good buy. I did download one video that shows a build on the device. On my kayfun, I generally just throw sloppy coils on there and they seem to work fine, other than wicking issues where it doesn't seem to keep up with my vaping. I honestly feel like the little ducts that carry the juice into the wick ends could be a little larger. How is the stainless mesh at keeping up with flow? It seems like capillary action might be a little faster than the absorption action of regular wicks.

It's actually, imo, a little slower, but a lot more forgiving. When you get a dry hit on a cotton eick, the cotton is damaged. When you get a dry hit on mesh, no damage, and no worries... just tilt a bit more, and vape on.

Thanks, and when you say tilt, do you mean like when drinking out of a cup so that it is horizontally? Also does the mesh wick have any issues with leaking? I should get my new rba by Friday, eager to try it out. Their clearance section can be a little addictive.

Yup... tilting the mod/tank up around 30 degrees with the wick on the downside will assist with wicking.

Leaking with Genesis devices is virtually unheard of when kept vertical. If laid over or jostled in a pocket, they can leak. You'll understand more when you actually see the atty.

I literally just got the device in the mail. It looks nice. Pretty much the same look and style of my Kayfun 3.1. Looking at a few more videos on building the wick, so I don't mess it up. I gotta figure out the right lengths to cut my mesh first. I'll let you guys know how my first build goes, and post some pictures.

Well, after messing around with getting the wick to stay wrapped, I was able to build a coil and adjust it so that it would heat evenly. I noticed the wick, with my center post adjusted for my mod, sits real close to the top cap when you place it on there. The second issue was the air hole. Really wish there was an adjustment for that, but I went ahead and grabbed the smallest drill bit I had and drilled it out. It was a little too much, but I think they sell air flow adjustment tops for these. I made a 1.6Ohm coil [Can't sub ohm on a Lavatube :( ]. I defiantly like the Kayfun so much more as far as flavor goes. The RSST seemed to give harsher hits, but it may still need to be broken in. But it will make a great backup atty. Looks like I'll still be buying those $20 taper tips for the Kayfun lol.

Here is a pic of my build. I trimmed the wick a little more and crimped it over like a fold and saturated the wick in some juice when I was filling it.
