While those pictures are a good reference they could lead someone to think any delivery device where the center pin extends from the base is okay.
Many of the newer sub ohm clearo's / delivery devices have a spring loaded center pin, while threading into the top cap they will depress and possibly cause a short.
If the center pin and the base surrounding the center pin of the delivery device touch the battery top it will result in a short / auto fire.

Is it a dangerous mod to have or is this risk evident with all mechanicals?

the SMPL is dangerous because it has no center pin.
a user who does not understand the problem may simply screw on a topper onto the 510 thread the same way he would screw on to any other mod, but since there is no center pin, he may get an instant short circuit when he presses the fire button.

I LOVE SMPLs they really are simple, but dangerous. Nyiddle, was talking about me, I was the dumby who put an Atlantis on a SMPL, it got to hot to try and twist the topper off. I didnt know what to do so I ran outside and threw it in a snow bank that had ice on the bottom and the mod literaly melted through 3ft of snow and into 2 inches of ice. I stayed away from it for a couple hours, just to be safe, my battery was black and toast. Im lucky thats all that happened.

Also be carefull if youre using something like a plume veil(auth or clone), the 510 is known to push up which will also cause a short. With batteries, if the wrapper isnt perfect dont use it, i had a wrapper that had the smallest nick out of the wrapper which caused a short, but not bad, I had time to get the RDA off.
