Greetings, while I had already picked up (and using) a SX-Mini I ran across one of these for < $40 and thought "what the heck, at that price what are the odds of it even working?" and bought one along with some other goodies. (Kanger STM Clone was one of the other items)
Since it was seemingly "slow boat from China", I'd mostly forgotten about it until I checked my mailbox today. The mod and all my goodies had arrived.
This thing is a beast. Physically larger than the SX-Mini and weighing as much if not more, it looks like there might of been room for 2x 18650's in there but 1/2 the insides is taken up by the electronics. (I'll let Youtube reviewers go into the gory details)
With a freshly charged battery installed I was up and running within minutes. Very easy and user friendly menu. In TC mode it only allows you to change the temperature - no ramp settings, no "joules", the up/down buttons do exactly what you'd expect - raise/lower the temperature. While firing the display will read the temperature and the watts used to maintain it. (much like one would expect)
Switching tanks the unit will ether ask if it is a new one or at the 1st firing will ask. Simple.
Downsides? It surely is not as comfortable in the hand as the SX-Mini and without any "ramp" or "joules" settings it might take a few seconds to reach temperature.
After trying a few of my TC tanks I turned my attention to the new STM clone. After removing the stock coil and getting the deck out of the box, I removed the coil that came pre-installed and did 7 wraps of Ni200 on a screwdriver. Once screwed down and the leads trimmed I checked the ohms on the SMY50TC - 0.13ohms, this will work. Loaded with cotton and soaking wet with 0mg 100% VG I got a 5ml syringe filled with enough (straight out of a new unopened bottle) 12mg 100% VG to fill the STM mini clone. (a total PITA with the needle I was using!!)
I don't have the lung capacity to fully run the setup "through its paces" and I normally would vape this at 270-380F but ran it up to 460F just to see what the fuss is about "high VG" and the STM deck without issue. (I normally would use the 12mg on one of my 'toodle puffer' rigs or mix it down to 6-9mg)
All told (minus registered airmail from China: $37 for mod, $15 for clone = $52.
