Hey guys, so I see all this stuff about the FDA saying e-cigarettes are harmful until tested more thoroughly...Yes I have read about how they are talking about that toxic DEG chemical/component added into like SmokingEverywhere's carts. However, has PG been proven to be safe in a vapor/inhalant form? Also is the flavorings being vaped also non-toxic? Yes I do know nicotine is addictive and can be harmful to your health...But I really want a solid answer if anyone has one, are Electronic Cigarettes harmful or okay and safe? I do realize there hasen't been enough tests and apparently all of us consumers of e-cigs are "guinea pigs" to this "new" product. I myself have been vaping for about a half year now and have tried many products like the DSE901 and Joye510 and different e-liquids and now am self questioning myself of whether this electronic cigarette is going to kill/injure me or not.

Please post your comments, critiques, and please share your knowledge! Thanks guys!

Hi Carsen,

Welcome to the forum (oops- You've been a member longer than I have, oh well, belated welcome anyway). You have some good questions. Probably one of the best places to start is here 7 Biggest Electronic Cigarette Myths - Associated Content - associatedcontent.com

In general, PG is in everyday use, is an ingredient in many products you have in your home, and can be an ingredient in asthma inhalers. You can get a lot more information about the FDA in relation to e-cigs in the campaigning sub-forum (be ready to spend some time there). Suffice it to say that the FDA does not currently appear to understand the concept of reduced harm.

So if all that info on Associated Content is true, then why would the FDA not want e-cigs? The FDA is not part of tobacco companies and from my knowledge hate tobacco companies, they are there to give the good american people safe products to consume (or so they try to make us think?), so if e-cigs are really safe, then why are they almost going to be banned??

(Im trying to put that in a question from a point of view from someone I know)

Also the question of PG still remains, I know it is safe to consume, but is it safe to consume in a vapor form? Because the PG gets heated to whatever the atomizer is heated to and chemically changes or whatever into vapor, like there was a post I read about VG being transferred into an extremely dangerous chemical acrolein or such.

Thanks for the info though CES :)

:))

THAT is the million dollar question. It depends on the comparison.

What would you prefer: 4000 chemicals including tar, arsenic, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, to name a few? FDA approved products that are a. ineffective or b. known to have side effects including (in no particular order) suicidal thoughts, depression and constipation? or a product that though not completely tested has had no major reports of side effects, and strong anecdotal evidence of effectiveness? If you think about the question in terms of reduced harm, which looks like a better bet? i know my answer.

The "safety and efficacy" studies that are required for approval as a drug device haven't been done, in part because they cost a mint- and the question of drug/device vs tobacco product vs reduced harm product is a whole 'nother argument. The FDA also hasn't actually defined guidelines for reduced harm products. The FDA has misrepresented the study that is getting all of the publicity- including not citing salient comparisons that have been previously published. The FDA is supposed to protect. I just don't think that they're doing a good job of it in this case, nor do I agree in this case with their definition of what I need to be protected from.

added with apologies if I've over simplified the technical aspects : I've seen the VG/acrolein question- and buried deep in a very long thread about testing the amounts of nicotine destroyed by vaporization was the information that the amounts of acrolein, if any, would be negligible at the temperatures reached in PVs.

are you sure about that?

so they can be regulated and taxed. If you really think that the FDA, Health Canada and the WHO are out to look out for your best interest? Think again.

I leave you with this. Could you explain to me why Big Pharma applied and secured a patent for the H1N1 vaccine 6 months before the first case ever surfaced.?

Follow the money... :)

Hey Carsen congrats on choosing vaping!! re; to your concerns on propylene glycol in terms of safety (when inhaled) and where the FDA stands on this issue I STRONGLY encourage you to go to google type in
FDA approved inhalation of propylene glycol. There are numerous links which will give you more pertinent info than you could dream of - and by, the way, the FDA has approved propylene gylcol as safe when inhaled - not once, not twice but numerous times. The FDA approved an inhaled medication combined with propylene glycol in the past as well. So despite what you might hear, read or otherwise think about the FDA and the safety of (inhaled) propylene glycol go to the various links and get the facts.

Here's what I see as the confusion with a lot of this. First, the FDA (good, bad or evil) over does everything. There is a difference between safe and safer. Anything we inhale into our lungs for recreational purposes is NOT safe.

Next, yes PG has been approved for inhalation...to a point. There have been no tests on the amount of pg we inhale on a regular basis, day-in and day-out, indefinitely. The flavorings are another unknown. No one has tested all these different flavorings we inhale. Sure, they are ok for eating, but no one knows if they are ok for inhalation, particularly in the amounts that we use them.

Then there's the issue of quality control. We hear that quality control is good, but who is overseeing that? Why was there DG in that one sample?

Are e-cigs better than combustible tobacco? Most likely, yes. Do we know that for an absolute fact, nope. Never forget that you're a guinea pig and you're doing this at your own risk. Stopping all smoking is still better...

...just not possible for some of us. :)
