You could pull off most small electronics soldering with a 15w iron if you wanted, I personally like to use a 25w. But yes, the 30w will be fine too - just don't overheat the components by keeping the iron on them too long. Putting alligator clips on the wires between the solder point and component as heat sinks can help tremendously.

Its easiest in my opinion to use the smallest gauge standard rosin-core solder I can find, right now I'm using .032 diameter. It melts quickly and sticks to most metals well.

everyone prefers no led solder and the soldering iron should be fine.

Not everyone... As long as the soldered part isn't coming into contact with juice, the best solder to use Sn63Pb37 solder. It has the lowest melting point and goes from solid to liquid and back again almost instantly (no "plastic" range).

will a 30w light duty soldering iron be sufficient for a madvapes style box mod kit? Can anyone recommend the type of solder to use???...
Yes and then some!

Use plain jane rosin core solder

$4.35 30W Electronics DIY Soldering Iron - US plug at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping <- soldering iron
$16.99 Lodestar L316228 56mm 2X Magnifier with Clips - with soldering iron holder stand at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping <- 3rd hand is VERY important/ plus stand!
$2.52 Slite Handheld Tin Suction Sucker Desoldering Pump at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping <- solder sucker (pulls solder out of PCB's
$0.96 CP2015 Soldering Remover (2.0mm x 0.7m) at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping <- solder wick
$1.30 High Purity Clean-safe solder wire - melting point 183 <-solder

You should be good to go with that, find leadless solder...otherwise if you use Pb solder have good ventilation
