This forum is awesome. So much good info on the subject that I've already spent hours and hours just reading threads before I leap in. Well I finally made the decision to get the m401 dragon and will order tomorrow as soon as truesmoker gets them back in stock. Because of this forum, I know everything I will need for a good experience, Extra atty's and carts, juice, and maybe even an extra charger and battery. Can't wait to get it.

I'm currently a 2 pack a day smoker and have smoked for over 20 years. I have that dam smokers cough and a bit of a wheeze going on by bedtime so sleeping can be difficult at times. Tried so many ways to quit but always came back. Anyway here's my question. How long can I expect to wait for some of those things to begin dissipating after I start vaping? Days? Weeks? More?
I also have read some posts here where some folks are getting a sore throat by the time they go bed which they attribute to vaping. That concerns me and I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge about this or reasons why?

I'm somewhat new myself, but maybe if you get several responses from people at different stages...???

Good solid choice. I purchased a 510.

You'll be hooked...

Yep....same here. (almost 30 years and darn I hate that wheezing crud)

Anyway here's my question. How long can I expect to wait for some of those things to begin dissipating after I start vaping? Days? Weeks? More?

I noticed the wheezing stopped after about 2 weeks. Coughing....still a little in the morning, but much, much better (I quit smoking analogs on July 8th, 2009), taste--started returning after 2.5 weeks but not all tastes, smell--started returning after about 1 week.

I also have read some posts here where some folks are getting a sore throat by the time they go bed which they attribute to vaping. That concerns me and I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge about this or reasons why?

The vaping drys out your throat. Just keep a glass of water, tea, kool-aid, whatever by as your vaping. I find that some flavors bother me more than others. But one thing is for sure, none of the "problems" with vaping compares to the problems of smoking. I'll take a dry throat any day of the week.

Good Luck to you!

Ez,

I'll second most of what Michele said above. I smoked my last analog on August 4, which puts me at two weeks. My results were a little more immediate than Michele's, though. So YMMV.

I smoked 2 packs/day of Marlboro Blend No. 27 (for about the past six years), and reds prior to that, for a grand total of 25 years of a 2 pack/day habit. I quit for several months back when my ex-wife got pregnant with our daughter in '05, and for the 10 weeks I was in boot camp back in '93. Other than that, it's been constant for me since '85.

Within a few days of vaping rather than smoking, I noticed better breathing (I could walk up the stairs in my house without panting or wheezing), and a slight increase in smelling and tasting.

Oddly enough, I developed a pretty nasty cough at first. When I asked my Dr. about it, she said it wasn't that uncommon, as it was a sign of my lungs trying to clear all the crap out so they could begin healing. That came on two days into my switch, and lasted for about three days. And I don't think I've coughed once since. (BTW, my Dr. is very supportive of my decision to switch to e-cigs, and laughed when I told her about the FDA studies on them. Her point was that whatever little they think they might have found in their tests on e-cigs, it still doesn't come close to posing the same health risks as analogs.)

Now, at the two week mark, I'm noticing that everything tastes and smells much better (or worse; bad food and nasty smells are more pungent than ever). The wheezing I got occasionally is gone. I can laugh without hacking. I have more energy (from getting better oxygen flow, I presume).

The sore throat thing is because of the PG in the e-liquid, and can also be exaggerated by certain flavors of liquid. Don't over-draw, and keep a drink handy, and you'll be fine.

Again, it sill be a different experience for everyone, though. So keep that in mind.

Hope that helps.

I've been vaping (and off of tobacco completely) since the end of January.

I had developed a smoker's cough that was so bad, it sounded like I was trying to puke up a lung. GONE within a week or two. (Sorry--it's been long enough that I'm having trouble remembering exactly when stuff started happening.)

It took about 1 month for my tastebuds to really come back online, although my sense of smell came back faster (like sometime during the 2nd week).

I can breathe deeper now, and I noticed that at about the one-month mark, if I'm not mistaken. Now when I work out, I stop because I'm tired . . . not because I can't breathe.

The sore throat can be kind of scary. For me, it was WICKED, but, then, I was vaping a very high nicotine concentration and vaping basically non-stop. (Former 2+ pack a day smoker for 30 years, so not surprising I'm a heavy vaper.)

The higher nicotine can be irritating to the throat, and it was giving me headaches. So I stepped down to a lower nicotine concentration, and then spiked my cartridge with the super high stuff whenever I felt a really strong craving. That helped a lot.

For the sore throat, it got better when I stepped down on the nicotine concentration, but I'm not sure how related that is . . . that was about a week into my vaping, and that's about the time most people start to get used to vaping and find the sore throat starts to disappear. :)

Drink LOTS of fluid when you vape. The PG and VG dry you out big time, contributing to the sore throat.

Eventually, it goes away as your body gets used to it.

My 510 kit came in the mail 6 days ago. It has now been 25 hours since my last smoke. (There is ONE last analog in my desk here at the office, taunting me). I've been a 'work smoker' for about the last 9 years or so...1/2 - 1 pack a day at the office but only rarely at the house nights/weekends. Before that, I was a pack a day smoker in college.

My only suggestion is this: buy a higher strength juice than you think you need. I was such a light smoker I thought I could get by with 18mg/mL juice and I was wrong. 36 is my number right now. Juice is so cheap, there really isn't a reason not to stock up a bit.

Being that you are a heavy smoker, I strongly suggest you consider getting a manual switch device.

Rule of Thumb: the more it looks like the real thing, the worse the performance and reliability.

I would suggest the Joye 510, the MANUAL (not auto) DSE901, the Prodigy, GG, Janty Stick, etc or any of the premiere devices. They pay for themselves due to the $2 batteries that you will have to be buying many of.

I also agree that you should get higher strength juice to start out. You can always cut it if you need to but you can't make it stronger.

Here are links to some suppliers to consider. Good Luck:
