Something wrong with my build...

Hey guys, so I thought I'd rebuild my coil since I've been having some buddies do it for me because I didn't have the material. So I attempted it yesterday, and it came out to look pretty good after wasting about a feet of 28g Kanthal and Silica wick... except, I'm encountering some problems with both of them.

The first:

This build is a dual coil, 3 wrap, 28g kanthal, with silica wick. When I finished building this one, I placed it on the ohm reader and it came out to 0.41ohms and I was pretty satisfied because I was trying to aim for 0.3-0.5ohms. All in all I felt that the build was nice because it was a soaker (but I'm going to juice like crazy fast). But the problem resides within the clouds. I am a cloud chaser and pretty much this hobby started because I got crazy seeing big clouds (lol). With this build, even though it is sub-ohm, I am not sure why it is not creating my desired amount of vapor. Can you guys give me some input on this build and what might have been done wrong?

The second:

This build is dual coil, 3 wraps, 28g Kanthal, with ekowool wick. I'm also encountering the same problem as the above and I am not reaching my desired vapor amount even though this build is also sub-ohm (0.26ohms). However, another problem resides with this and it seems that I am getting more dry hits with ekowool than I am with cotton or silica. It sucks and I'm still wondering why.

If someone can shine a light on both of my builds, please guide the way for me and tell me what I can do to fix it!!!

Thank you very much and I appreciate any feedback that can be given to me.

It's difficult to see the actual build in these pics since the wicks have juice in them. From what I can make out, it seems to me that your coils could be a little too far apart. I would try bringing them a little close together. They also seem to be far away from the pos/neg posts. Can you shorten the distance between the coils and the posts? One other thing: when building the coil, make sure that the coil is touching the wick / ekowool without constricting it too much.

Hope that helps. Do you have 30 or 32 awg Kanthal? If so, I would try using the finer coils. You may need to give it an additional turn to get the desired resistance but that will also provide more surface area for vaporization.

I think it should be touching the positive and negative posts... then again, I didn't take a good picture in order for you guys to take a better look at it. As of right now, I do not have anything other than 28g since I just bought 100' of it from an eBay vendor. Other than that, I think it might be how I am wrapping it...

Do you have any tips to wrapping the coils?

It may be a silly question, but do the coils line up with your air holes if not that will greatly reduce your vapor production

Gotcha on that one. The coil is lined up with the airholes, however, I see that in some builds, they're not covering the coil with the wick. Could that be a possible problem to not obtaining the amount of vapor I am trying to aim at?

You asked for tips on wrapping the coils.

Wrap the coils just tightly enough around wick so that you get maximum coil to wick surface contact without constricting the wick. If you wrap it too tightly the juice will not be able to flow to the coils easily. Keep the distance to the posts to a minimum.

Pulse the coil after wrapping around wick and attaching to posts. You will see hotspots. Use a tweezer to bring the coils closer together and to nudge them to make better contact with the wick. As you adjust, work toward an even burn.

Rinse and repeat and you will be a master within 3 to 4 attempts. :toast:
