Sony does not make 18650 batteries anymore! Here is a post from planetofthevapes

I recently purchased some Sony VTC5 18650 batteries from an online vendor. They listed the battery specs on their website, but I wanted to double check with Sony before I started building my setup. I couldn't find anything on their website, so I emailed them. Here was their reply:

Dear customer, thank you for your inquiry.
The 18650 type batteries are no longer manufactured by Sony.
This product was never intended for individual, public sale and are not eligible for warranty or engineering support.
It was only available to OEM makers of specific devices.
The specifications and markings on the battery may vary depending upon the OEM’s requirements. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the true manufacturer or authenticity of the batteries without physical inspection and manufacturing code research.
This type of battery is widely available on the internet market through non-authorized resellers.
Therefore, Sony is not liable for the performance or use of this type battery for non-intended purposes.
Such applications should be done at the user’s own risk.
Furthermore, any battery of this type claimed to be Sony brand may be older stock.
We apologize that we cannot offer further assistance with this matter.
Sincerely,
Media Services by Sony
The bolding was theirs.

This is the truth.

Pretty much all the major manufacturers do not produce unprotected Li-Ion cells for general consumer use. Samsung, Sanyo and Panasonic also do not market their unprotected cells to end users/consumers. They are all made to be part of devices with built in protections.

When we as vapers use these cells, especially in mods that have no built in protections (ie: mechanical mods) the user of such products is taking a risk.

It is all on the user of such devices to take precautions and use safe practices.

This understanding of the risks of using unprotected devices is paramount to remaining safe using such equipment.

I have been hearing rumors about Sony not making the VTC5s anymore. Is that true??

You saw it from the horses mouth (above email from Sony). Yes it is true.

It's becoming clearer that Sony may or may not have made the batteries themselves in the first place. It seems that Sony had contracted other manufacturers to make these batteries for them. Batteries marketed as Sony's may still be available, but they won't actually be made by Sony. There will no longer be such a thing as a genuine Sony battery that is actually made by Sony.

Its hard to believe how Sony could put 2600 mAh in a single battery and other manufacturers like Efest, Mnke cant do that. I see only caa 1600 mAh 30A batteries.

edit: Efest has the stuff :)

Efest Purple High Drain Battery:
18350 700mAh 10.5A Nipple Top
18350 700mAh 10.5A Flat Top

18500 1000mAh 15A Flat Top

So basically there are only VTC clones, good clones and bad clones.
I'll refer to the good ones as "genuine".
Some people provide list of suppliers that sell genuine VTCs, but how are we to know that this is actually the case?
Even if a specific supplier is trustworthy, how are we to know if the one that sold the bulk to him is also trustworthy? It's not like the supplier is conducting and publishing a stress test report for every bulk?
There are a lot of example on how to spot a fake VTC, but since all are basically fakes, it doesn't mean that the ones that look less fake then the others are actually better.

This is why I use AW batteries.
AW has never made batteries. They bulk buy cells from manufacturers, and then test every cell. Only those that meet AW's standards get wrapped as AW batteries. The rest get sold off for other uses (like electric razors) So we can trust that AW batteries will perform as intended.

    only:
    AW Batteries - Authorised Dealers

The most common fake AW battery is easy to spot tho'.
Look at the "RoHS", it "ROHS" on the fake.
