I had the same type discoloration on a week old Sony VTC4. I bought it locally at a shop whom I trust to sell genuine batteries. They exchanged it and claimed to have not seen this type issue before. They thought mabey liquid had caused it, I was unsure and asked to have it replaced.

I used that battery at .6-ohm for a very short time, a few hours max. I wrapped a new coil at .9 and the rest were at 1.1-ohm. It was never to my knowledge hot while being used or being charged.

I don't believe it was caused by liquid either. I'm still unsure and would love to know the cause.

The batteries performance in all phases seemed to be normal. I have six VTC4's and two VTC5' Sony's, I feel they are good batteries, just want to know what's causing this issue.

If you read the thread I posted a link to you'll see that we worked through a lot of possibilities. I cut the plastic sheath off the MNKE battery in the end and found no issues inside. IMO it's just the way the sheath lays on the battery casing. All my 18650VTC3 and 4 batteries show some evidence of this effect when I look closely, but none seem to be harmed in any way.

Ryedan, I did read the whole thread you provided the link to before i made my post. I saw the pics of the batteries as well. I was under the impression the cause was still unknown. I saw you found no obvious damage to the MNKE. The way I read it, it was still undetermined as to what positively was causing the discoloration.
