I replace the wire with enameled wire. Much easier to thread through the atty to work with. Rat Shack has a 3 pack. I prefer the red 26ga.
The nichrome wire in most factory attys is 38ga. 36ga is easier to obtain, slightly larger in dia (.001) so it's more durable.
36ga wire is 20 ohms per ft. So with most attys 3.2-3.4 ohms 1.25-1.5" is a good length to wind.

The enameled wire coating is tough and heat resistant. If you want more protection slip the plastic jacket over it once its fed through the ceramic cup.

Just make sure you check the ohms before you close it all up to make sure the metal mesh didnt scratch through the enamel coating. Not usually a problem.
Setting them a little higher from the bottom helps as it gives more diatance for the carbon before it restricts and put pressure on the wire.
