Actually... Do a search for a custom wood working shop or cabinet shop in your area. Many times they will let people look through the drops or scraps. We give ours away free, it's kinda of a service for both. People get what they need and we get it gone :)
Woodcraft should also carry select boards, if not In store, online. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2000707/17925/Walnut-34-x-6-x-36.aspx
Exotic Wood USA has some neat stuff,
Exotic Wood Suppliers - Buy Exotic Wood Turning Blanks, Squares, Blocks & Stock - Online Sale

There is a chain of stores out there that sells anything and everything for woodworkers. Hand and power tools, veneers, all manner of finishing products and stains, clamps & vises & glues & everything you could ever want or think of and... wood. I'm drawing a blank on the name right now. Maybe I can reverse search it. I know there is one in Watertown MA. Anyone?

Its my first one. I learned a lot from this one. I made everything down to my battery contacts. Except the drip cup a cut down a brass fitting to make it work for what I needed.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for at all. I ordered a 20lb box of hardwood ends from Amazon it was $30- free shipping with a $35 dollar orderthirftwood.jpg Its the wood in the middle of the first pic not the thrift store pieces with the yellow price tags.awood.jpg the 2nd pic is most of the rest. Its mostly turning stock size, Its grab bag everytime. Its mostly too thick for your uses unless you can slice pieces of. I am not a woodworker just killing some time making some Mod-atty-Juice holders.

You could also search for sawmills in your area, that are still running. Whenever we do a project with a "specialty wood" (hemlock for a fort b/c its weather resistant, black wallnut for a mantle b/c it looks awesome) we go to a local sawmill.

Thats not a bad thought. Thanks
