I really do not like getting spitback while vaping. Be it a spray, an aggressive mist or something that feels like an evil gleet! I can't always tell what causes it or prevents it, but it irks me when it does happen. What have you found caused it--coils spitting, spraying or gleeting--and how do you build to minimize it?

The first thing I've found is coil placement; moving your coils out from the center will decrease spitback considerably. In my derringer, I had tons of spitback on the first few builds; moving the coils out closer to the air holes reduced to the spitback to nothing. Narrow drip tips can also cause spitback since an entire drop of juice can form from condensation at the base of the drip tip; wider drip tips eliminate this because the sides are too far apart to allow a drop of juice to form, condensation creates a layer around the walls of the drip tip but they're not close enough to create a 'drop' of liquid that can be sucked up on the next hit.

And probably the most obvious of them all; over dripping. Too much juice sitting on your coil will inevitably cause spitback; the pressure the vapor creates will push out some of the excess juice.

Another less obvious one; twisted coils usually pop and spit a lot which is why I generally avoid them; the nooks and crannys created by twisted wire are too large that instead of getting a really fine mist like you get with claptons, you get drops of liquid popping back at you. The only twisted wire I like is 32g or thinner because the nooks and crannys created are much smaller than that of twisted 28g or twisted 26g.

All good points. I agree with over dripping being the usual culprit. But this issue also plagues many sub ohm tanks with stock coils. We see sub ohm coils continue to increase in size, as well as the amount of wicking material used to accommodate the low resistances. This results in the coil being required to heat more and more surface area of juice-soaked wicking material, and more power and/or time is needed to in order to vaporize the juice. The "ramp up time" for thicker gauge wire, claptons, twisted, sub ohm tank coils, etc. is also much longer than in the past - like coils used in the protank or evod, for example. If the coil doesn't heat up fast enough, it's just boiling the juice until it gets hot enough to vaporize. Most of the time, what works for me is just bumping up the watts a bit. I fire it up for a second or two and wait for the crackling stop before taking a vape. Someone on reddit also suggested using a mesh screen in your drip tip. Like the one used in coils for sub ohm tanks. A delicate balance of power, wick, juice, and coil is needed for the perfect spitback-free vape. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my @$$.

It really sucks when you get complacent vaping in bed and the piping hot spitback shoots right in your eye...or the ex-gf's eye! Haven't seen her since...

I sometimes think that what people talk about with certain atties/builds delivering "so much flavor" actually has to do with the fact that the liquid itself is getting sprayed in their mouth. I think this is one reason why drip tips that prevent spitback are also considered by many to rob the atty of its flavor. Not sure why the spitback guard would lessen flavor unless it's because the spitback brings flavor...which, to me at least, is pretty obvious.

Well, juice definitely has loads of flavor when you drink it. The next logical step is to transition from vaping to pure misting.

Tired of spitback from vaping? Well worry no more - Introducing the Nano Facial E-Mister!
Bluetooth enabled. Just fill with 4 ml of your favorite e-liquid and enjoy the mist all over your face!

I cant say for sure what causes it, seems to have something to do with wicking for sure, and possibly tiny irregularities in a coil.
One thing I did notice. All my attys with horizontal coils used to crackle and even pop loudly when fired for the first time in the morning. Given that observation, perhaps it has something to do condensation building up on the coils.

However, I notice pretty much zero of that on my Origen with the vertical coils and nothing on the genny either. No popping, spitback or crackle.

Don't think it comes from over dripping. On the Origen the wick tails literally hang into a well full of juice.

Don't do a twisted build. Dont vape a cold coil. Warm it up then vape.

Wicking. Thinner juice, thicker wicking. Thicker juice, thinner wicking. I tend to overdrip, but rarely if ever experience spitback. It is all in the wicking.

Definitely would agree, once I perfected my wicking technique I all but eliminated spit back even in my Derringer

I would agree that it's something to do with wicking.

Last night I built a standard fused Clapton 26/34 for my Aeolus v2 and used vapers choice cotton and was surprised how I was getting no spitback.

This morning I rewicked it with some cellucotton rayon to compare and was surprised how much spitback I get with it.

I wonder sometimes the differences for some as to what gets deemed as spitback vs. just normal "wet vape". True spitting is the worse and easiest to avoid--it seems. But for me, spitting, spraying or misting is all what I'd like to avoid--and typically do, but those other times is why I made the thread.

I think it's deeper than simple coil placement because sometimes the coil has to be right under the drip tip (depending on where the air comes in), so depending on the atty, moving the coils closer to the airflow sometimes it will still be right under the tip. For me (with straight-forward builds) I have better luck getting a flavorful vape without juice in the mouth--be it spraying, misting or spitting--by having denser cotton for macros coils and slightly looser cotton for 'micro' coils. Then, it comes down to coil placement.

But as @kformeck also said, certain twisted builds are just more prone to spitting, so with those, I guess, they work better for certain atties where you can get some distance from the coil and the drip tip. Like with the NarDA, maybe that's not the atty to use a twisted build since the coil is super close and directly under the tip and since it has dual-airflow, trying to move the coils closer to the airflow would be counterproductive since you can't move it in two directions at once.

I don't know, I am talking out of my ... This is just one of those things in vaping where I think the art of building comes in. No hard and fast rules, just takes knowing your build, wicking and atty. Right now I am vaping out of my Sub Zero RDA and I am getting very minimal misting--barely detectable. The vape is great. And this set of dual-coils is spaced-macro build. Similar to this build (but with one less wrap) and my cotton now is denser than used in this photo:

p.s. Recently I've become a huge fan of macros!
