They are metal and can cause a short. To avoid that people have been oxidizing the wicks to give them a protective coating. Now I have heard the oxidation is bad and now people are using unoxidized wicks and covering the contact area of the coil with silica or cotton instead (hybrids).

Silica caused some concerns because it might get into the lungs. But there was a good thread on that which came to the conclusion that the particular kind of silica used could not break down into small enough bits to get into the lungs - but could give you a scratchy throat.
