I haven't delved too deep into the Star Wars universe, then again there isn't that much to delve into. Most of what I've seen beyond the movies is glorified fan fiction and tangents off of the first 3 movies.

Now a Star Trek universe has a lot more on its plate. Movies out of the wazoo, 5 television series, tons of official and unofficial fiction, but most importantly non-linear storyline! Loads of tales are happening in the Trek universe amongst a myriad of characters. Star Wars? Once you boil it down you have Jedi vs. Sith... or Bobba Fett.

Plus, Star Wars was soo much cooler before the last 3 movies came out. Lucas killed the genre with that kid-catering BS.

My fave is TNG - but I'm still split between Star Wars and Star trek - Star wars was a success because of the great acting in the original movies and the rich religious overtones it had that a lot of new agers and even Christians could identify with. The acting sucked so bad in the new movies and they cheapened the force as being organic. But the action, designs, and music of SW movies is superior to Star Trek, at least in the original - nothing can ever beat those scenes with the hundreds of storm stroopers standing attention with the Imperial March song playing... it's like an acceptable way to enjoy the natural militaristic desires we all have inside of us without feeling the guilt of watching movies of the REAL Nazi storm troopers.... :).

This is for you, gashin;
YouTube - Star Wars Alpacas

JOHN WILLIAMS IS A MUSICAL GOD!

(but Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" that they used for DS9 was great too.)

Yeah Star Wars is more action and militarism which is why it prob appeals to guys more. Star Trek is more realistic and problems are solved through negotiation among tons of different characters/species. The problem is that sometimes it gets boring because they almost always make decisions that are morally perfect and the solutions are too clear cut and successful in the episodic stories. Yeah LOTR was decent but at times it was too sentimental for me. Dune is too crazy for me haha - it's like a movie you have to really pay attention too or you'll get lost right away since the story is so different.

Wow you actually read the WOT also? I had the first book but it was so long I never even bothered getting the second.

LOTR was "decent"? That is herecy in some parts, Sir! LOL Maybe the movie was a little bit sappy in parts, the books were better. As is always the case (with the exception of Bladerunner.)

Dune was crazy. The books are so, so much better, but even they got rather trippy. David Lynch's version lacked TONS, but was still better than the SciFi channel movies, I think. I wish Lynch had had the budget and and eight hours to work with that SciFi did. They are working on a new version of the movie, Peter Berg directing. I'm hopeful.

Yes, I have read all of WOT, many times. The twelfth book is due out on the 27th, and I reread them all each time a new books comes out, so I have read "Eye of the World" at least a dozen times. (I'm not just a fan, I am fanaticly obsessed. LOL) I must admit, the fisrt book can only be discribed as "chewy." But if you get through that one, you should be hooked on the series. Well, if you are an epic fantasy fan, that is.

Epic fantasy is definately my genre. It is hard for me to think of movies without talking about the books they are based on. (sorry for the slight derail of the thread - maybe we should start a literary geek thread :) ) I have read tons of series and single books in both fantasy and sci-fi. Wheel of Time is obviously my favorite. I am also fond of Dune, LOTR, Narnia, Dragonriders, Mists of Avalon, Hitchhiker's Guide (someone else got post #42 <pout>) Kushiel, and Gor. Though those last two might be considered a different genre altogther. LOL

I have two weeks to finish 450 pages. Not a problem.

Be well,
~A
