There is no practical reason to leave the lid off that I can see. It's not like it requires evaporation, it doesn't need to dry out. It's not going to cure like tobacco or any other plant matter. If anything give it a shake once in a while so it doesn't separate out.
One of the vendors I use says to let it steep with the lid off, but I thought the same thing. What does it have to breathe? Like wine? I figured I'd end up knocking it over sooner or later, or maybe the cat would and I wouldn't realize it. Lid stays on for me.

I don't think we know enough about steeping to specify what is right and wrong. I've been following in another thread that has discussed steeping, and apparently some chemical reactions as well as oxidation may be taking place during steeping. Leaving it open to air could definately either speed up or change what occurs.

My personal take on it is that I'm going to try whatever, and decide on whatever works (very scientific, right?). At this point there is no right or wrong. Of course, we can always learn from the wisdom of our 'elder' vapers in regards to what works best.

My understanding is that setting your bottles in hot water (tops off) for about 15 minutes, and then putting the tops back on before putting them in your dry, dark place, and steeping with the tops off for the first few days are both methods for speeding up the steeping process. Is either any better than just leaving the tops on in the first place? Beats me. There's not much scientific study been done that I can find. :)

My steeping is as follows, mix juice shake well, next day, take lid off, squeeze bottle to replace the air in it, recap bottle. Leave for 1 week but shake daily when I remember to do them, taste, if needed, repeat the above for another week.

Never found any juice that has changed dramatically after 2 weeks of steeping, but the flavor has got more intense if left longer.

Most if not all fruit juice is good within a day or two of mixing, tobaccos are best after 2 weeks or longer if I have time to leave them.

All juice is keep in cool dark place.
