Depends on the liquid, in my short lived experience.
Try the liquid once you get it. Is it perfumey? Smell like alcohol? Then steep with the lid off.
None of that? Steep with it on

My ritual...
Initial Prep - Warm it gently, shake it well, caps off for four hours, recap and shake again.
Steeping - Leave it in the cabinet, with a weekly squeeze for air exchange and sniff test (and a shake). Repeat until done.

Cap of for three for hours drip and decide then change air and shake daily until it's ready.

I've had liquids where I've left the cap off for a few hours, shake, change the air and recap. Then other liquids where the cap stays off for over a week, with the same ritual.
