In this thread ccure posted a link to a chemical supplier that sells nicotine.

The link didn't quite work for me, but I was able to search for nicotine and came up with this:

Search Results

I got 9 hits:

(±)-Nicotine
L-Nicotine
N’-Nitrosonornicotine
NICOTINE
Nicotine Ditartrate, Dihydrate
Nicotine Polacrilex, 20%, USP
Nicotine Salicylate
Nicotine Sulfate, 40% Aqueous Solution
N'-NITROSONORNICOTINE AT 1000 UG/ML

My first inclination was to go straight to the plain 'ol "NICOTINE" (4th hit) but I don't know. The first one looks more right - it has the health warnings, the poison label and is sold by the gram, as opposed to the ml. The chemical make up is: C10H14N2 - which Wikipedia says is nicotine.

Does anyone much more in the know than I am have any advice?
I know there are some on here with a chemistry background.

As I see it, even if the ban goes through, I would still be able to make my own if I had a nicotine supplier and a VG supplier.

I would, of course, be very careful and make sure I understood the amounts and mixtures very well before trying.

You've got to be very careful when trying to buy certain chemicals in essentially pure form. DHS might want a word with you.

I'm not at all certain what the technical legalities of purchasing nicotine are versus the practical reality of actually obtaining it, but I don't expect you'll have an easy time of it.

I could get pure nicotine sent to me at my lab without any difficulty, but I couldn't explain why I possibly needed it. Even if I were to convince my general manager to let me pay for it, our local safety officer and our corporate safety officer would put the clamps on it right quick.

Anybody who can obtain nicotine is likely paying about $800 for 500 mL of 99+% pure nicotine with water as the 1% or less impurity.

From this, they could make nearly 14 liters of 36 mg/mL flavorless liquid. Assuming then that the propylene glycol component price is trivial along with the container, the liquid is being produced for around $1.70 per 30 mL.

I imagine that most suppliers don't get pure nicotine, but rather pre-diluted in the 20 - 30 percent range, and pay a considerable markup. Someone along the supply chain is making a killing. I think our suppliers do OK, but their suppliers are laughing all along their way to the bank.

FFS! Why do we keep getting people on here who quite clearly have NO IDEA how DANGEROUS pure nicotine would be to work with?!?!?!

Even if you did find somewhere that would supply it to you, are you aware that your actions would most likely kill yourself or someone else?

I'm sorry for this rant, but I cannot believe that we get this subject on here so regularly.

It probably has something to do with the fact that nicotine is the primary reason people are here and not everyone is a wiki-expert on every subject.

nicotine sulfate , is a pesticide that was ony 40 percent and no longer used because of the damgers. It was in a product called black leaf 40 at one time. At just 40 % it was deadly, you would mix 500 ML to 100 Liters, and that would treat several acres of crops. getting a drop of pure nicotine on the skin would cause you to die.

The fatal dose of pure nicotine is approximately 40-60 mg (0.6-1.0 mg/kg, 1-2 drops)
