A UoL study apparently shows that mortality from smoking, when measured at population level, can apparently decrease fairly rapidly following widescale smoking cessation.

We don't know if the scousers have got a bee in their bonnet or they are on to something. If this is true, the US and UK will already be experiencing some sort of fall in smoking deaths, as both countries have a significant number of e-cigarette users, which will probably reach 6% of smokers by 2013.

#1- That seems rather unbelievable, but I haven't read the research article.

#2- Even if e-cigs did result in an almost immediate decrease in mortality it would NEVER be attributed to them. It would be attributed to increased taxes, reduction in legal places to smoke, new graphic warnings due to come out, etc... With the FDA now in charge of smoking regulations it is 100% guaranteed that they will take credit for any improvements in the smoking rate and health of smokers (real or fabricated). In fact, it's essential that they do so, so that all the $$$ they are throwing into this is not seen as being wasted.

I would say "This discovery means that policies such as smoking bans or reducing saturated fats are effective at improving health and would save the NHS millions very rapidly." was the conclusion of the study developed prior to any work being done.

It's not worth reading the study. It's combining the other bogus studies, doing a meta analysis on them and reporting the results to add to the "growing body of evidence" working toward "the evidence is irrefutable". We haven't seen any change in the US 6662 tobacco mortality rate yet have we? How long have smoking bans been in effect.

Someone should do a meta analysis of TC BS, the conclusion to that study would be "self evident".

These types of bogus studies have made the rounds and have been shown to be complete junk. One of a number or articles by Brad Rodu

Tobacco Truth: State-Wide Smoking Bans: Little to No Impact on Heart Attack Deaths

They are cherry picking the results to an extreme. This is nothing more then anti-tobacco propaganda.
