Study finds nicotine safe, helps in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's | Tampa Bay Times

Something the brighten your day.

Smoking, of course, damages the lungs and blood vessels, and contributes to an array of health problems, but nicotine — the calming chemical that cigarettes deliver — might actually be good for the aging brain.

"It seems very safe even in nonsmokers," he said. "In our studies we find it actually reduces blood pressure chronically. And there were no addiction or withdrawal problems, and nobody started smoking cigarettes. The risk of addiction to nicotine alone is virtually nil."

I'm in the process of getting my dad (who is afflicted with fairly advanced Alzheimers) onto Nicotine patches. The Director of Care is actually quite open to the idea. The objective being to help my dad maintain calmness and help with focus so we can further reduce his psychotropic meds. Not expecting much in cognitive improvement, but who knows - he can still read, when I take him for his daily walk out to the garden of the care home he often reads off the printing on the cushion of his walker "Evolution Walker" and things he sees on the way like "Soiled Linen Only" when we pass the laundry bins. Mind you this is a man who cannot remember what he ate for supper even as he is finishing the last bite.

My mother died of Altzheimers. She could still read and do crosswords and watch game shows. And remember childhood events and such. But the recent memory was shot to hell. Strange things in the mind.. I was a co-caregiver for mom during much of her final years...

Tache you have my sympathy.

Robert, you have my condolences. I hope you found as I have, what I call the "Zen" of Alzheimers, learning to live and love in the moment.

Nicotene has been portryayed as the Charlie Manson of smoking addiction. Right or wrong, proven or not, it would take decades of positive findings to change the image of nicotene, I'm afraid.

i am afraid your right.
meanwhile since 1998,
:"Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone." (Singh Gurkirpal, MD, “Recent Considerations in Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Gastropathy”, The American Journal of Medicine, July 27, 1998, p. 31S)

Big pharma will have to come out with an expensive patented nicotine based anti parkinson pill for it to become accepted.
Nicotine is being studied for a variety of medical issues because it seems to really help...

--Alzheimers
--Parkinsons
--Tourette's Syndrome
--Ulcerative Colitis
--ADHD

I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting.

I personally believe that Big Pharma would be praising safe nicotine delivery at this point...
But then vaping came along and screwed up the Master Plan...

They can't declare it a safe, effective treatment as long as it can be found for $40-60 per liter of 100mg usp grade. They lost when the it's not a drug ruling came down and they've been trying to recover from that ever since.

Talk about putting a kink in their well-laid plans...
That's gotta sting.
