I had lunch with one of the girls in my office. After lunch I took a few hits on my Nemesis. As she walked a bit ahead of me I was checking out her most delicious-round .... and without thinking I put the Nemesis in my pocket without locking it. Two minutes later in the hot Miami sun I felt the heat and realized what I had done. Punishment I guess for impure thoughts.

If you're into dripping (IMO, the best in vaping), and would like to do that without holding a bottle in one hand (i.e. when driving), consider a safe, mechanical REO mod. The fire button twists to lock and they use a collapsible hot spring which acts as a fuse in the event of a short. The door slides on and is held by magnets. The Mini 2.1 gives you about 8 hours with a 3 ml bottle and 18490 battery, while the REO Grand gives you around 16 with 6 ml bottle and 18650 battery. Even the Grand is smaller than a pack of regular length filter cigarettes. You can get the Reomizer 2 (RM2) Rebuildable Atomizer, which is fed from the bottom, where excess juice drains. Shown here is a Grand with disposable atty and drip tip.

The bottom/low button design of mechs is my #1 peeve with them, just don't like the feel. I'm a "triggerman" as it were...

The side bottom button design is basically easier to manufacture. With a top button, you have to pass through the negative to connect the positive, so the geometry is more complex and you need to add steps for alignment, and adding insulator material. The bottom buttons basically just "round the corner" of the negative portion, so it can just be a simple post touching another post, hanging out in free space under the battery.

There are good inexpensive top buttons though. Check out the #23 and #24.

Bottom buttons do feel a little weird but really they make more sense because the button is always where you expect it to be no matter how your device is rotated. It should be fewer moving parts to break. And it's pretty easy to have a safety switch on it that prevents switch travel which is more effective than something like a rotating dial which locks but may unlock in your pocket.

The bottom button on the Smoktech Magneto is the best engineered bottom button I've seen and I have an ELA. They are comparable in functionality and feel but the magnetic switch in the Magneto should mean it'll never wear out and will always feel the same every time.
