subtank mini, .5 ohm OCC spitting juice... any suggestions?

Hey guys

thanks for your help in advance

Just got the sub box mini kit, started out vaping DSV Wookie e-juice 75vg 3mg, had a little bit of spitting but very minimal.

Bought some OCC replacement coils and started vaping Max VG Juice, 3mg, Im pretty sure its about 90vg.

No matter what setting I vape on and i've tried two coils now fresh outta the blister pack and i'm getting alot of juice spitting into my mouth, no matter what wattge setting I vape on.

any ideas what might be happening?

thanks again

You wouldn’t think it would be flooding with 90% vg, I run 30/70 pg/vg in my sub tank mini. I tried the coils that came with it and it flooded so bad it was leaking out of the air intake holes. I took a needle and gently re-adjusted the cotton at the juice holes in the side of the cartridge and that seemed to help. Then I turned up the wattage and adjusted it so the draw wasn’t so tight and that seemed to completely solve the problem.
I had the most problems with the .5 coil (not using enough watts I think).
I then tried the RBA and have not had any problems with it since.
So I suggest you experiment around a little. Every one of these devices seem to have their own little querks.

Hi @OnlyOneKeano
I have similar experience when the coils are fresh new... after when the break in (1, 2 tanks) they are better.. as said above play with the wattage and start with a low wattage for the very first tank.. I usually set it to 15 W and go higher.. another thing I fond helpful is to prime the coils from the side holes and, not putting juice directly on the coil - it take perhaps 2-3 drops each side, and a bit more time however it works well for me.

Yeah i'll have to mess with it a bit. Guy at the nearby vape shop is convinced I got a bad set of coils, told me to come in and he'll throw in a fresh coil outta a fresh pack see what happens.

It definitely is weird that max vg juice is flooding a coil in a tank system. For ages the problem with tanks has been the opposite.

When u say 'adjust the cotton in the occ coil' what do mean?

I'm sure I could solve the issue completely w the RBA coil, however tbh the main reason I bought this was the convenience of not having to build coils anymore!

Sounds like maybe a normal occurance, not enough wicking, or just positioned wrong?

Yeah I would think you would have dry hits if anything, Im using 70/30 vg/pg and I kind of got the feeling anything over 30 watts was going to be risky with the stock coil. Flavor seemed to start diminishing at 22w.

The first coil cartridge I tried was flooding pretty bad, so I took a needle and gently poked it through each juice hole just enough to grab the cotton and pull it out slightly so the juice holes were completely plugged.
It seemed to help but I still had a little seeping out through the airflow holes. I put the other coil in and it still leaked, looked at it and I could easily see the coil through the juice holes, seemed like maybe not enough wicking material.
So I put a coil in the RBA, wicked it up so the wick was going down and kind of leaning against the juice holes. I have rewicked it twice since then and the tank hasn’t leaked a single drop, great hits...

Well I was kind of hoping to not have to bring my rebuild tools with me on the road too, lol.
Im interested to hear how things work out when you try the other coil, Im pretty sure the two that came with my tank weren’t right either.
I hope they get you fixed up, I really like mine, good hits and great flavor.

You're not gonna believe this. I took it to my local Vape shop here in Van City, east side vapes, and guy put in a fresh coil. We hit it hard for a while and seemed like I had solved the problem. I could still taste some juice in my mouth but he didnt think so when he hit it. Put my sub box away for a while during a meeting, went back to it anhour later and found all the liquid leaked outta the air holes!

Anyways, while I was there I also picked up new juice, 2 different flavors from 2 different companies. So I git home and said 'F it', I'm putting in another fresh coil and some new juice. Cleaned out the tank as well. Took the 75vg-25pg 3MG Cloud Connoseuirs High Five flavour, cut it down 50% with VG, primed the coil, filled the tank, let it sit for 10mins and started vaping.

Problem Solved. Awesome tasting five alive flavored juice massive clouds no liquid in my mouth.

Now it could be that juice I was vaping, or it could be 3 bad coils consecutively. With kangers reputation in the past with shotty pre built coils I don't put it by them and with my luck who knows. But tbh I'm leaning towards that juice I was vaping.

Whaddya think?

Sounds like a bad batch of coils you got. I experienced the same thing with the Subtank mini, stayed off the OCC coils and started building on the RBA.

Then i bought 2 sets of Uwell Crown Black tanks, had a terrible experience with the 0.5ohms OCC coils from both sets. Couldn't go past 30w without dry hits. Switched over to the 0.25 ones, all is good now. :thumb:

So you liquid spitting and leaking with the kanger OCC and dry hits with the Uwell Crown OCC's?

@OnlyOneKeano Yes, with the older horizontal OCC coils and the current vertical OCC coils. If building on the RBA, spitbacks may occur if you don't put enough cotton in. I suggest you start building on the RBA, you can tune to your preference that way.

I confirmed that its a bad batch with the Uwell ones, as other people are posting about it online and on Uwell's Facebook page.

Yeah I used vape a mech mod with an IGo W and was building my own coils but eventually with work and the kid etc I got so busy I couldn't dictate when I would get to build a coil, and I didn't have a back up device. I could build when I got time and many times that would be long after my current cool would burn out.

So I embarrassingly went back to the occasional analog and that started to get more frequent, untill I heard about this k box and it's versatility etc.

Anyways I plan to now build and use OCC coils when travelling or when I run out of time!

It seems like these OCC coils are really light on the cotton and even with Max VG you're still gonna get spit backs

That's what made me start to build my own coils. Pre-made coils are a crap shoot. Rebuild the OCC coils. There's a couple good videos out there. Just like we did with Protank coils. Factory coils suck.

I also think with the OCC they tend to compress the cotton so tight so I poked through the juice holes with a needle to help make the wicking more effective.

Usually if the wicking is effective, you'll see air bubbles coming from the juice holes everytime you take a hit.

Hope it works out for you!

@HexohmNation
The 3 OCC's I had problems with was excessive wicking or leaking

When I vaped I could see the air bubbles coming from the holes. But the strangest part was I could sit my device on the table and watch it wick, watching air bubble after air bubble rise up, flooding the coil and I wasnt even vaping it.
