I just bought a sub tank mini. The standard coil heads work perfectly but I'm getting dry hits off the RTA section. I had this same problem with the Lemo and traded it in for the subtank mini. It seems to work great and keep up with my vaping, but after it sits for a few minutes, the first vape is extremely hot and dry. After the first vape, it seems to wick and work fine. I've followed the tutorials for wicking and have tried several different methods but none of them solve that issue. Is that normal or could I be doing something wrong? I've tried more cotton, less cotton, organic cotton balls, sheishedo, ko-gen-doh. Even if it's sitting upright all night long, that first vape in the morning is like sucking on the end of a torch....otherwise I am completely happy with the device but I would like to find a proper solution for that issue.

mine did that too. I noticed it to be worse when the tank was fuller, but got better as the juice level came down. I had to do primer puffs ever few hits just to keep the wick wet. I tried every possible wicking method, but it didn't help.

Anyway, I resorted to modification and deepened the juice channels with a Dremel and cut-off wheel. Also I notched the lower chimney ring where it sits on the juice channels.

Don't be afraid to "over wick" it! Run your cotton through the coil "a little tight, but not real tight"! Pull the wick up (bunny ears) on both sides ,and put the RBA side tube on. Cut the wicks even with the top of the RBA's side, then fluff them out,and gently push the wick ends down to the deck, and wet them with some juice. Then use a small wire,or tooth pick and open up the wicking so you can look down inside and see the two juice channel holes in the deck. Put the top on and away you go. I first tried to build the RBA with as little wick as possible, but soon found it couldn't keep up with my chain vaping. After using more wicking,it will chuck out great vapor hit after hit!:)

RKS: thanks for the tip! I made the wick a hair thicker for a little more snug fit inside the coil and seems to have worked tremendously. I haven't had a dry hit since!

Jefx: try a thicker more snug fitting wick and see how it works. I'm also pretty handy with the ol' dremmel so if I have more issues I'll try your method although I think the issue is solved now.

@Jporter I wick it pretty thick and use buttkickers (youtube) wicking method. It still didn't fix my issues before I dremeled it.

@Das Auto thanks! That pic was of my experimental phase of the modification. After proof of concept, I went back and cleaned it up a touch.

Fyi, anyone thinking about dremeling it out, a new RBA deck can be had for under $10..... just in case it gets botched.

I agree that the tighter the better. You want that cotton to be tight in the coil (but not tight enough to move your coil). Then you want the cotton to be long enough to just touch the deck. I usually trim the cotton where I want it, juice it up, THEN put the chimney on. All you need is enough cotton to be touching the deck.
