Not all horizontal coils are built the same, so to speak.
Here is a vid that explains it better and it may help you decide which style you are looking for.

Ok excellent point and video. I would differently want the higher quality ones such as sold at smokeless image. If I am not mistaken these are made by kanger. Good prophets does not seem to claim that theirs are kangers which could explain the difference shown in the video. So the question is who else sells the "real" horizontal coil cartos besides smokeless image. Preferably at a cheaper price but I would rather pay a little more for quality than a little less for crap.

No worries, just as long as you find the ones that you are looking for.
I understand it that there are 2 basic styles that I call protected and exposed type coils.
Kanger makes the exposed and SI/Bloog/Halo sell the protected style I believe.
There are good and bad with both depending on your voltage; juice thickness and vape pace.

Maybe others with more details will chime in later and give some more points to consider.

So the ones from SI/Bloog/halo are protected coils. I assume this means they are much more resistant to burning. That would be something i would be interested int because that was always my problem with filler cartos I tended to vape them just a little to long without topping off or switching cartos. Although this seems odd to me. I was under the impression that kanger was the main manufacturer and that SI/bloog etc were just rebranding. Now I may be completely wrong on this. Situations like this is when I'm real glad I post and ask before just buying. For the record boge LR 510's was what I used on my ego when i used filler cartos. I'm really just looking for the best 808 carto and a place to buy a good stock of them at the best price possible.

Some say that the exposed coils work better for their particular application, such as higher voltages; thicker juice and larger vape pace.
Others like the protected as they may use thinner juice; etc.
So it may depend on your particulars which one is best for you.
I would buy a few of each and see which I liked. Then jump in and look for a large shipment.
I have been a clearo user since Feb/12, as I think cartos mute flavor but they are more consistent in terms of vapor.

Might I ask what clearo you use. I actually use one of the vivi novas on my 510 stuff. I'm really just get the 808's for the small form factor and at least for 510 was never really happy smaller clearos. the only ones that worked for me were the larger tank like clearos which would look quite odd on a standard 808 batt.

Almost forgot is there anyway to tell these protected/unprotected cartos apart? Or is it pretty much SI/bloog/halo sell the "protected" ones and all other horizontal coil cartos are assumed to be the other.

Not sure what is meant by protected and unprotected coils. I use both SI and kanger branded horizontal coil 808 cartos and find them to be pretty much the same, inside, out, and performance wise. Thats why I go for the kangers that I can get at under $5 a box.

The SI's are excellent cartos, but so are the kangers. There are subtle differences in appearance, I can tell a SI because the connector pin at the battery end is slightly wider than on the kanger, also the condoms are different, otherwise these cartos seem identical.

The coils in both have the split centre tube covering them. Is this what is meant by protected?

Are you sure 'protected' isn't vendor hype?

protected was skelley's wording to describe what he thought was one of the differnces between regular kangers and those sold by smokeless image and others. To the best of my knowledge the I have never heard a vendor claim a carto to be protected. Your experience seems to support what I thought. That Kanger is the OEM and some vendors just choose to rebrand. All the same I've ordered some cartos from Smokeless Image and some Kangers from another vendor. After some use I'll probably cut one of each open to see if they're any different. Also I've got to ask where do you buy the kangers for so cheap.

Healthcabin.com in China. If you're in the US then you'd have to weigh up whether you can stand the slow boat method of delivery. It's all the same to me, since I'm in NZ.

i actually dont have any problem ordering from china provided its a big enough order to make it worth it. I just wish I could find one who stocked the hangsen juice i like and the kanger cartos

Right there with you! Right now I go to one place for my batteries (SI), another for my cartos and atomizers (HC), and I've just ordered a bunch of hangsen samples from a seller on vaporhawk.com to see if I like it before ordering more.

I'm really cheap, so I shop around a lot. All these places have really reasonable shipping (or in the case of VH, free in most cases). You have to be patient, too, and order well before you need stuff.

Yes, exposed & protected are my words to describe the coil.
Here is a pic of the 'exposed' kanger.
Where the 'protected' coils are 'housed' in a cup and the coil itself doesn't come into contact with the batting material. SteelJan explains the way the coil in the 'protected' types are housed in her vid.
Pic of Kanger...
