Switch Rating Question

Just as an example: Horn Button on madvapes is a push button switch rated at 5 amps @ 12vdc. How would that amp rating change down to an ecig mod application? 4vdc is 1/3 of 12vdc, so does that mean the amp rating at 4v would be 15amps?

No, amps rating stays the same independent of the voltage.

Hmm ok. So to make a "mechanical" mod with a push button it would have to be a high rated button with a fuse before it to prevent welding the contact?

If the button was rated high enough you wouldn't need a fuse. I don't know of any threads off hand, but there are a lot of pretty simple home built mech switches out there. Another solution would be to make a mosfet switch using a mosfet, tact switch (or any switch really), and resistor.

Could you elaborate a bit more on that idea. I've been vaping for a long time but I have only been getting technical with it in the last 6 months. Lol

This thread has some good info on a mosfet switch I did in a Reo. This was a little a more complicated than a mosfet switch needs to be due to conforming in the Reo. But it lays out the basic info.

That was extremely helpful, bap. Can't thank you enough. I will probably pm you occasionally when I get stuck on my mods. Is there any difference safety wise in the P and N mosfets? Do I want the resistor on positive side of the tactile switch?

You use a p channel when you switch the positive voltage and the n channel when you switch the ground or negative voltage. N channel mosfet are typically more efficient than p channel, meaning less vdrop to the atty. However even the vdrop a good speced p channel isn't very much.

Refer back to the schematic for the resistor placement and etc, as it depends if your using a p or n channel and etc.

From what I've been told it is always safer to make/break the connection to a battery from negative side. I don't if that applies in our modding applications, but it did apply well to automotive systems(12vdc). I think I feel better with that config.
