Sx Mini vs Vapershark rDNA 40

I'm troubled with making a decision between these two mods. Currently I'm using the Vapershark dna 30. If I don't charge the battery at all during the day it only lasts til 5 PM. I'm looking for a mod with interchangeable batteries.

I feel that the SX Mini looks better and seems like it's made better. It has 60 watts vs 40 with the rDNA 40. Looking at the you tube reviews the Sx Mini seems to be difficult to use or to get started with. The SX mini also has an up-gradable software but doesn't include the battery. And finally, the screw off cap needs a coin to open a feature I don't care for. One is US made the other in China.

Can anyone shed some personal experience with me to help me make a decision?

I have both. I personally have a slight preference to the rDNA40 simply because it is smaller and lighter. It is also a bit easier to deal with since it doesn't have as many options to have to deal with. You put the atty on it, set your wattage and vape away. The SX Mini is a tad larger, and much heavier. You also need to switch from Power mode (adjusting watts for kanthal coils) to Joules mode (adjusting joules for nickel coils for temp control). The SX Mini also does not automatically detect a new atomizer and adjust the resistance reading accordingly. If you are putting a different tank with a different atty on it, you need to press the power up and power down buttons simultaneously to manually set the resistance of the new coil. This means that if you are using a temperature sensing coil, you need to make sure that the coil is at room temperature otherwise the resistance reading will be off. The SX Mini also has the ability to adjust the mode between Soft, Normal, Powerful and Powerful Plus. With just one 18650 battery, neither one will last me a full day.

I have 2 rDNA40's and they are solid devices and the screen issue has been resolved, but the SX has a pretty loyal following as well and appears to function as advertised. The cost practically the same, so it really comes down to form factor. I will say this though, I just got an email today from Vapor Shark stating they are having a 20% off everything sale (Sat, Sun and Mon), so that will knock a chunk off the rDNA40 (coupon code: MEMORIAL), plus free shipping. If you do get an rDNA40, get a shark skin also, worth the extra $10.

I own both and love both for different reasons.

Now the DNA 40 is an all around more accurate chip but you can do a lot more with the SX Mini. The only flaw I find with the SX Mini is while it's DC-DC in wattage mode, it's PWM in temperature protection mode.

So I guess it comes down to how you vape. If you just plan on building single coils or using tanks with Ni200 coils like the Kanger Subtank or Smok TFT, go with the rDNA 40. But if you like dual coils and a bit more power, I'd get the SX Mini. You can build duals with the DNA but you are going to have to either use 30g or 32g NI200 or else you are going to need a lot of wraps.

Also in wattage mode, the SX Mini does 60w with a single battery and 120w with the tube extension. There is an update around the corner which will bring it to 150w.

I actually believe the newest release of the rDNA is using an updated chip with the same kind of resistance lock because of issues with it switching modes.

Edit

Yep. It does use resistance lock now. I just don't know if it's mandatory.

Actually, what I was referring to was the fact that when you swap out attys, the Vaporshark prompts you with "new coil up same down" and you either press the power up button or the power down button. The SX Mini doesn't do that. You need to remember to press both the power up and power down button to set the resistance of the new coil.

Thanks for that info...you've made my decision

I love my rdna40 vaporshark. Magnetic back cover so you can swap 18650's fast or you can USB charge or wirelessly charge it if you wanna spend a little extra. I have 3 vaporsharks. The first dna30 mini 1200mAh, the first 18650 rDNA30 with the damn screw in the back cover and the new temperature control rDNA 40. I've not had the pleasure of trying out an sx chip powered temperature control device yet but I can tell you that evolv is good at what they do. You also have another option. The hcigar Heartbeat HB40. It is the first chinese device that is powered with the evolv dna40 temp control chip in it. I also have one of these as well and it performs very nicely, though it takes a little getting used to the fire button placement but for well under 100 dollars and Evolv will also honor the warranty on the chipset, it may be another option for you. Just throwing that out there. :)
