Tank cartomizer question

When I got my first ecig kit (The Inferno) It came with a silicon ring that I can place inside the carto before I put the drip tip in. I noticed that the replacement cartos come with a thicker rubber piece with a hole. I thought nothing of it, tossed the rubber piece in the trash, washed the silicon ring, and placed that inthe new carto. I later found out that the rubber piece can easily be pushed in (after saturating the carto) and place the drip tip on. Before I got my vivi novas as well as my recently bought RBA tanks, I used to have about 3-4 filled tanks with different flavors. A couple had the silicon rings in while the others I just used the rubber that came with the replacment carto. I'm noticing that the silicon rings are getting discolored and aren't looking all that good anymore. Is it safe to say that I can toss those silicon rings? Or to they have a real significance in the tank carto setup?

I always toss them. Never given me any issues.
