I am a vaper of all of 6 weeks, and a brand new member on this site. So please be kind when I screw up the protocols of membership.

I am having a terrible time finding flavors that don't taste like chemicals. I followed directions from U Tube to make sure that my equipment isn't at fault. Yesterday I was lucky enough to visit a vape shop where I was able to sample of 20 or more flavors. I only bought two. The rest had a strong chemical taste. The owner and I decided the problem was with my taste buds. I smoked for over 50 years (yes I'm a member of the Geriatric set) so I wondered if anyone has had this type of experience, and if so how long until your taste buds worked well again?

I will really appreciate any info or advice offered.

Thanks,

MamaG

Welcome to ECF!! :toast:

Couple things come to mind, for one the liquid may need to steep, age a bit. If you take the top off the bottle and leave it open overnight, some of the chemical flavors will evaporate off. Some liquids may take 2-3 days, some may take a week...:(
Also it may be the supplier where you are getting your liquid from, there's a e-liqid section hereon the forum that has recommendations for well prepaed, good flavor liquid.

Another thing is your taste buds are still recovering from so many years of abuse. I only smoked for over 40 years..:)..so mine recovered after a few months. Even then they will continue to improve for months after that, little by little. Drinking lots of water will help.

6 weeks is a long time. Congrats for sure.

I run 3 flavors throughout the day. Cinnamon Roll, Moo juice and Orange Dream Bar.

I didn't like any of the chemical sweeteners. They tasted plastic or something. I bought a lot of flavors that I didn't like at all.

I quit around Christmas and my taste buds aren't right yet. I am old like you.

Don't throw anything away. Complex flavors get better over time. They really do. Heat some water, soak the bottles in the water, shake them up, remove the caps and let them sit on the counter overnight. It helped some of the ones that I hated.

I think you might need different flavors throughout the day. You need an all day vape (ADV) and then flavors that clean you out. And don't forget to drink plenty of water.

I am further into this then you, and at times I can't smell the difference between Cinnamon Roll and Moo Juice (Strawberries and Cream). Your nose and your taste bud will take time to return to normal. I am not sure when.

On a side note, my farts actually smell bad. I didn't notice it before so my smell has to be getting better. It all takes time.

Congrats again on 6 weeks. That is awesome.

I remember when I first got into it, I stood in my local vape shop for hours sampling juices! I ended up leaving and everything tasted like almonds (??? how? NO IDEA!) It took a few days for my tastebuds to recover. From what I've read on the forum, different people suffer different tastes when they have vapor's tongue. Anyway, just try brushing your tongue with your toothbrush and toothpaste a few times. Smell and maybe even drink some coffee and if you have a really strong tasting juice, give that a shot. You want to send a shock to your tastebuds and olfactory system!

If these don't work, it's a heavy possibility of the quality or age of the juice. If the vendor is not making their juices precisely everytime that can obviously effect flavor. Juices also sit in their respective tanks for awhile in tasting areas within stores, so age comes into question.

Hope I helped!

Ask your supplier what is in the Juice. You have every right to ask cause it's going into your body...Now see if they use anything other then this: found on Vapedoctor.com

What is e-liquid made up and what determines consistency?

E-Liquid is usually made up of mostly a propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG) base. Most e-liquids are made of entirely propylene glycol and are usually more preferred; some are made in a combination of the two depending on the consistency desired. Some people may be allergic to propylene glycol, so a vegetable glycerin base is better suited to their preference. These e-liquid bases, flavorings, and sometimes a small amount of distilled alcohol or water are added all contribute to the flavor and throat hit of the e-liquid.

Hi MamaG, and welcome to the forum. I am in your same Geriatric set, and smoked for about the same amount of time, from early 20's to now in my 70's, all of my adult life.

I haven't smoked a cigarette since I started vaping a couple of months ago, and I don't think my taste buds have recovered, lol. I keep reading where people talk about how much better this or that tastes to them, and I honestly cannot tell any difference in the foods that I eat, from now with no smoking, back to a couple of months ago when I still smoked. Things taste good, but essentially the same to me when I eat them now, as before.

Now about the vaping and the flavors of the juice....When I first started, I tried quite a few juices that I got at a local store, and they weren't bad, but I couldn't really get a distinct taste from them. I kept vaping them, because they were not at all unpleasant, and they were keeping me from smoking, which was my whole point of starting this in the first place!

Then I ordered some juice from Mt. Baker Vapor, which some folks here like a lot, but say has to "steep" before you use it. Others have complained that it has a chemical taste to them. Taste is so subjective anyway, and especially when you are dealing with different ages of people who smoked for varying numbers of years.

I got a juice from them called Cinnamon Roll, with no extra flavor (shots, they call it on the website). Everyone said you need to let it "steep" before you use it. I'm not a patient person, and I'm old, and my time is moving quickly, so I opened it right up and filled up my tank. Hooray, I could really taste "cinnamon". It was the first juice that I could actually say tasted good to me. I used that bottle up and reordered, and I still like it a lot.

When I heard other people describe all the subtle nuances of their juice, almost like people talk about wines, I think my expectations were set too high. To be brutally honest, I do not think my taste buds will ever be as discerning as some folks here. Maybe mine never were to start with, or maybe all those thousands of cigarettes did them in. Either way, it's okay with me. The juices I've found so far are pleasant, don't make me cough, and give me the nicotine I need so that I don't plan to ever smoke a cigarette again.

Keep experimenting, and keep an open mind. I am sure you will find some that you like. Something else I told myself about juice - I didn't have 12 or 15 flavors of cigarettes that I smoked, so I don't really need to obsess about finding so many flavors of juice. Just a few that I like will do fine for me.

That's the great thing about vaping, you are free to customize it any way you like. As long as you're happy with it, that's what is important.:)

I make my own liquids but when I first started, mint & cinnamon were all I used. I think switching back & forth while drinking lots of coffee and cran-apple & cran-grap juices kept slapping my tastebuds around enough that the dreaded vaper's tongue never lasted more than a few hours for me. Mint will still put it my tastebuds to sleep but just switching to a different flavor instantly perks them back up now.

I think you need to try a different shop as well as let the liquids you already have air out some. The chemical taste may not go away if they are over-flavored to begin with. Some people even have trouble with plastic taste of drip tips so they only use glass or metal.

Try simple flavors at first to try & rule out specific flavors you might not like. You might also just be super-sensitive to artificial flavorings and have better luck with naturals. There are a few out there.

Your post made me smile. I was about ready to write a comment on a couple of you tube channels accusing the people of mixing up flavor that is tasted, and smelling a flavor. I was trying to think of a way to tactfully say that I thought they were full of hooey. Thank goodness I didn't.
I like Mt Baker Vapor too. My first successful encounter with taste was Spring Break. I ordered a 70 VG 30 distilled water with one extra shot. When I order it again I will get 2 or three more shots, and I think it will be perfect. (for me)

So my tasting prospects are looking up.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me.
