Really.

Ah hell....I've always felt, as a Texan, that I was part of something special, and succession isn't that scary a proposition to me. Of course, I'm currently an ex-pat Texan living in Ala-...-bama. (No offense,k? It's just not home.) Would I need to get a passport to come home to visit?

Edit: My dad's family actually came to Texas from Tennessee and apparently there are some kinfolk that settled here in Northern Alabama at one time, so I think of it as just a branch of my home :p)

sad thing is, i am now looking for a customs broker to do just that... still going to wait till after the 5th to put in my order though... i figure worst case scenario, i put major time into my atomizer mod and start a service to recondition them.

That's great. I feel attys are the most critical part of the e-cig. (speaking of hardware, not juice.) I'm gathering parts & information to rebuild my own, which I'll share. I can send you a lot of research material on the RN4081 atty's if you're interested.

People were saying I was crazy to try to repair a "throw away" part. After Tuesday, it may not be throw away any more. Either way, it keeps me busy on my days off.

Jim - I've got a broken atomizer, the wires came unsoldered. I'm guessing I could get a jeweler to fix it maybe? I'm not sure, even if I had my soldering iron, that I could do it, the wires are just too short.

If the coil is broken, that's what I'm researching now. There's a wicking material that the coil is wrapped around. I'm looking for the material now. The coils are made of a special wire also. Other wires should not be a problem.

This is also very tiny work. Once I actually start handling the components, I'll pick up a lighted magnifier to work under.

My only problem is that I'm rarely at home to work on these things. I'm out to Iowa tomorrow for a job, then will be heading to Minnesota. My next time home? I'm not sure. That's why it's sort of a part time thing for me, but if others decide to take the plunge, I'll share all my research and information.

well, i have about 20 various atomizers sitting around from different manufacturers. i have repaired a few (its a pita). what i am working on now is modifying the original atomizer with two small compression fittings, that way you can just plug in a new coil and wick.

if you wish to experiment, the coil is just thin nichrome wire, the wick is kevlar or silica glass depending on the manufacturer. cheap source for kevlar is any bass pro shop, they sell the natural undyed thread for a few bucks for 50 yards. i had a source for the silica glass thread, but that seems to be a bust. am going to look into some of the boat shops and check if they have fiberglass thread for spraying.

i am experimenting with a few diff atty designs at the moment. the one that shows the most promise so far is a nichrome coil inside of a pyrex tube that is vacuum sealed. next would be the same thing without the vacuum seal. the wick i used for these is thin kevlar woven cord with the ampule inserted into it. vapes well, but still has a few bugs to be worked out. i will need to find someone to manufacture it at some point as getting the coils sealed in the pyrex tube is cost prohibitive (an atomizer would cost $30-$50 this way if handmade). this could be a good start though and i have already started looking into using a thermal compound and a thin wall metallic pipe in place of the glass.

i also messed around with some bobbin heaters, but the size was too large for my use. have played with the halogen method, and it works pretty well, but needs to be overdriven if you want fast heat.

if the ban goes into effect, the best bet would be to manufacture all of the components, add a removable micro fan to it, and call it a toy fog machine... like the wizard stick, but without the gaudy plastic, and with a vaporizer running at lower heat.

trintek - can you actually get things shipped to a port in Texas rather than where the stuff usually goes? I assume it goes to CA.

actually, you should be able to... i know transmarine navigation corporation has an office in pasadena and i believe they run their own ships through the port at houston. port aransas, corpus, freeport, galveston, etc should have similar setups but you would have to work with a shipping company that operates out of the specific port. port san antonio and the old kelly afb complex are both designated ftz's, but i am not sure which shippers use them. it is my understanding that customs are handled at the destination port when using a shipping service that handles customs brokerage, but i may be wrong.
