I've had this converted VV Grand for around 2 weeks, and thought it was time I extended a special thanks to mod-Master Robert.... :toast: :thumb:

I've been vaping for close to 4 years now, and have developed a preference for the consistency of regulated voltage / power devices. I had a couple of VV Grands in the past, but for my own reasons, didn't care for them much. I used a Kicked Grand for awhile, but wasn't wild about using the 18490's. Well, I happened across a post mentioning that Robert had plans to construct a Grand capable of using an 18650 with the Evolv Kick awhile back. Within minutes of reading that, I found myself e-mailing Robert to ask if he needed a beta tester. ;)

I found out that particular project is going to be awhile down the road, but was offered a converted VV LP Grand which can do the same thing! :) I haven't been so stoked over a piece of vape gear in years!

I consider the Kick 2 to be Evolv's DNA15. Full safety features, 15 watt / true 6 amp limit, can fire as low as 0.5 ohms, and step-down ability to 5 watts. PBusardo found it to be very accurate in his review awhile back, while producing a smooth power output. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWVCA46z-w4 Not everyone's cup of tea given it's 15 watt limit, but I'm only out to replicate the pleasure of tobacco smoking... Not bellow dragon clouds on a daily basis. ;)

Anyhow, this mod is fantastic! :) I tried my Origen v2, and Oreico Storm A RDAs out at first, but was blown away when I threw Sophia on top.. :p The Sophia by Leo is dynamite in a small package for certain.. Just about the size of a long-barrel 510 atty. The old-school look takes me back to when all we had to use on our REO's were 510, 306, 801, 901 attys and cartos. Many of us dreamt of some kind of rebuildable to use back then... Now it's reality.

I am currently vaping away at 1.0 ohm using AWG 28 / XC-116 ceramic wick in Sophia. :vapor: She does require NR / R wire to be used, but to me, the flavor of a good ceramic cup atty is worth it. I was using pre-made ready-wires until last week, when I ran across a fair deal on one of the best wire zappers available on the classies. ;) It only took a couple minutes to zap NR tails on this AWG 28 coil. I usually get over 3 weeks out of a ready-wire coil / small piece of XC-116 anyway, so I do not need to rebuild often enough to make it a hassle. Actually, I enjoy using the zapper..

Yep, this Grand is a keeper for sure!! It was a raw tumbled, but I decided to rough it up some. It has some shine, but it's not a fingerprint magnet, and daily use scratches won't bother me. :) I'll eventually find something to cover or fill the original VV switch hole in the side. I'm thinking a red or blue crystal.. Kind of like the bottom switch of the Nzonic.

I look forward to using this Grand for years to come!! It's everything I wanted in a mod and more!

THANKS ROBERT!!

Great to hear your enjoying the Mod Lee :) Thanks for sharing my friend I really need to get this model going I think there are many folks out there that would enjoy this type of vaporizer . Love the finish you put on the mod looks great .

I noticed the button covers stick up a little high on these mods I can make a cover that sits a little lower and I think it would look nicer . I have had a few request for these nice to see them in use

I really appreciate it Robert! :)

I didn't notice the button sitting tall, but now that you mention it, it would be nice to have it sit lower. ;) Just LMK when you have some new ones made, and I'll purchase one for sure. The finish is a work in progress.. Thanks for the compliment. I'll probably change it again with a different Dremel brass brush sometime soon. it looks better in person than the pics show. ;)

If you do go into production on this type of Grand, I have one suggestion.. Install a battery divider in it like the Grand.. It would be nice to have it high enough to hold the Kick. I have not had any issues with the Kick 2 moving when the button is pressed on this one though. It stays in place well. I even dropped the mod once so far, and the battery or Kick did not move. :) It would just be more secure with a divider.

Just one more little thing.... I would like the button to have more resistance and "spring" to it.. Like on the other metal REO's. I thought about taking it apart to see if I could bend the contact, but decided to leave it be. It's nothing major, just thought I'd mention it.

Regulation plus 18650 bat would be killer for a lot of people, I would imagine. The only thing keeping my better half from getting off of her provari are these considerations - she doesn't like to manage batteries and wants/needs an all-day bat with consistent firing.

On behalf of her, put me down for two (to start - she'll be a collector, I'm certain).

Well, after going through $20.00 in Dremel attachments, I still was not happy with the swirled finish attempted. Close, but no e-cigar.. ;) :)

So, I switched gears.... Broke-out the masking tape, and self-etching primer for raw aluminum:

I pondered filling the old VV switch hole with JB Weld or Bondo. Nah, this mod is what it is... A converted VV Grand, and it will remain as such, even with it's new suit. Besides, I'm REALLY hoping that Robert will turn out some extended Grands for Kick usage soon. I already have the finish combo picked-out in my mind, and can almost feel it in my hand... :)

I will post pics of the finished finish on this one after the paint dries overnight. I think it's going to look sweet. :smokie:

So much for that thought... I had a nice paint job completed, but then couldn't stand looking at the old switch hole. It's now history after stripping the entire mod down again, applying some JB Weld, self-etching primer / paint:

I used Rust-Oleum Hammered Brown to finish the converted VV Grand. It looks different in person than the pics show. Much better in person IMHO. :2cool: It's kind of a cross between bronze and brown to me, and almost looks stone-gray in low lighting. Hard to capture with my camera... I'll take some pics in sunlight when it's all back together with the brass button cover that Robert made to sit lower on these conversions. I have something special planned to finish the door for contrast. :)

EDIT: I also have a better appreciation of the work Robert goes through to finish these mods.. ;) VERY time-consuming on my end. Prep, sand, apply JB Weld.. Wait.... Apply 2nd coat of JB Weld because 1st one had shrinkage.. Wait.. Sand, prime..Wait.. Sand, clean, appy paint.. Wait.. etc..

Is this is a kick 2 and a bit taller than the LP grand, I would love to have one. AND a bigger bottle to boot :)

Yep, The Evolv Kick 2.. It's not much taller than a regular Grand. I'm not sure how much shorter Robert can make a dedicated model of this VV conversion. It looks to me just tall enough to hold an 18650 / Kick 2. I'm working on the larger bottle.. ;)

I think all-in-all, this project has been a success.. :) I still need to stalk the mail-man for the brass button cover tomorrow, and finish the door to totally wrap this up. It sure does look purty in the sunlight this morning though :smokie: :

That looks wonderful, like a slightly long LP Grand.
