Well, I took mine out of the car, filled it with baking soda, and left it sitting outside for about a week. Still had a hint of nasty ciggy stink in it so I put a car air freshener in it. Now I can't smell it anymore.

You can order new ashtray inserts from a dealership. I almost had to do that. I, too, found the smell just gaggy and repulsive. I still can't believe how much I reeked when I smoked!

Hoping I don't have to replace the ashtray. It's a 68 Cougar. Not cheap. I wouldn't have used it, but the previous owner(s) did, so it was already ruined. Guess I'll try letting it sit longer.

I have a friend who details cars for a dealership. He detailed my car for $20. I wasn't really trying to get the smoke smell out. I was trying to get the garbage smell out!! My husband drives truck for a transfer station in our area and when he gets off work he smells like garbage, he was driving my car to work for about a month. He said he sprayed enzymes in the car that would take care of most of it, and then sent home this cup and packet of stuff. You put a little water in the cup, open the packet and set it in the care for at least 8 hours then air out the car. He said that would take out any smell that was left in there. I Didn't need it, but kept it just in case. No smoke smell at all now! not even the ash tray!

Check YearOne or other restoration parts places. I have a 50 Ford coupe and I can just about buy any nut bolt or otherwise for that thing at Mac's or Dennis Carpenter. Not positive, but I'd venture a guess that the tray for a Mustang would probably fit - that could increase your chances. They sell knock-off OEM style stuff and something like that ought to be pretty cheap. Google is your friend.

Lots of good tips! Thanks guys! I'm going to try the enzymes. I hadn't thought of that, I don't know why, I use them at work all the time. I just wasn't thinking of cigarette smell. Cigarettes are, for the most part, organic . . . they should do the trick. If not, I've got a lot of other great tips in this thread!!!!!
