Yes I always by protected when I'm dealing with Li-On and Poly's.

Well normally the numbers on a battery are the size in mm
The first being its diameter,
The second its length.
The fifth is the cell.
For example: an 18340 battery is 18mm in diameter with a length of 34mm. 0 = round get it
Are all batteries created equal? No! batteries are not created equal!
And even batteries from the same manufacturer often differ from one another due to Poor or NO quality control.
Rule of thumb if it's man made or in China's case, Child made,
it can be screwed up.
