UpDaTTTE thiNgy
hey guys, first off, baby is super neat-o, shes happy and healthy and poops all over the place! so everything is great with baby infant. On the shop front, we alllllllmost had a batch this weekend, but rubys spindle belt just totally obliterated on ummm, maybe wednesday.... and that put her down for a bit.. she never got that scheduled surgery she was supposed to have so that still has to happen but this was unrelated and from what other owners of this machine have told me, this spindle belt is just going to blow up every 6 months and that's just the way it goes... ehh... ok.. i guess..
it's kinda-a a good thing there isn't a batch this weekend as wife lady is still step'n into her new roll as baby momma and batch sales are pretty stressful to monitor, do change orders, and come with a few hundred e-mails and other BS to deal with... so a little more time for her is a good thing.
I'v just been bouncing back and for from the shop and home, things keep moving right along, i'v gotten a bit farther with the brass BBs... had a hand full of stupid little problems, but nothing catastrophic, and they are pretty much in the clear for any failure that would bring me to pull the plug on the project. So here's a run down on how it went..
first i got my brass chunks, these have weight... a lot o weight.
to machine um', they have to fit in this jig...
but they are too wide, so table saw time!!! ok, so here's the first real suck poo issue. if you remember i told ya last time that brass likes to warp when ya cut it... this isn't from heat, this is due to it's internal structure holding it's shape.. so as that internal hold'dy type stuff goes bye bye, warpy time.. this is poop'y becasue there is no way that stock can fit into the pallet jig holder thing unless it's something close to kinda straight...
so time to bring in the conveyer drum sander of doom... this machine don't take no crap from nothin', if something isn't flat, it will make it flat! or trip a circuit breaker trying. Take that brass... you just got your ... handed to you.
soooo now it's finally all locked down in ruby and we can do some cutting...
little different code, everything is just a little slower in brass..
here's after the first end mill gets done doing end mill things...
pretty shiny bits...
action shot!!! with coolant on.. that got my phone wet...
few hours and code tweaks
(cuz i have no idea what i'm doing) later....
k, cue second suck poo.... the jig they got machined on holds the bars dead flat... with multiple thousands of pounds of force.. BuuTTT, take um out of the jig and now they are at liberty to warp all over the place... or in this case "bow"... bummer, because again, they won't fit in the next jig like this....
this wasn't to big of a deal though, they just needed to be separated by hand as the bow was originating from the material holding each box together... not a biggie, just time i could be spending eating all the misc food people tend to bring over when you have a baby... really, we should have more kids just for the free food!! what a deal!!! heck, my sister just brought me a ... breve latte for no reason at all (like wow)... i was so in the mood for it tooo, worked out great...
side note, "REAL" grapefruits just an't in season so i have to settle for oroblancos and full blood pomelos... these things are such a ... rip off...like really, why do they need all that skin???? i can't eat that!!! you look at it and go, wow, that's so big, there should be like mega ton's of fruit in there... then you cut it and your heart sinks... it's just not fair..
k, time for second Op pallet/jig thing..
now that they are all separated they plop right in there nice and happy...
all loaded up.
stuff things...
all donez..
and ready for Op3..
neat-o..
just a little check to make sure the brass ring threads in super happy...
and the last milling Op for the body, the little air hole dingles..
soooo on to the inner plate...
i decided not to chemically blacken the engraving on these as they look so good just cut... but here ruby stops for a bit to let me brush finish the tops of um before she cuts out the rest.
all cut... she's so great when she's not broken!
so now these little guys need to be separated to fit into the next jig, the material holding um together is really thin so they just break apart..
...or you could fold um into a nice pencil holder for the shop!!!
all broken apart
(no i didn't keep the pencil holder..)
then they go into this pallet thingy...
and then hammer whacked...
and then cut up pretty..
k, so we have the three main parts now... they have a little distortion to hammer whack out to get um all fitting nice and happy, but all done.... they'z purrdy....
compared to an aluminum BB, umm, they weigh about a ton more... lets see,,,, aluminum is round .1 lb per cubic in,
brass is .31 lb per cubic in.... soooo the main body is 1.81 ci, the slide cover is .46 ci, and the inner plate is .1ci of material...
sooooo 2.37cubic inches of stuff... so,, mathing... mathing... carry the two....mathing... divided by pinecones...
6061 t6 aluminum BB = 3.8 onces (just the three main metal bits)
464 naval brass BB = 11.75 onces (just the three main metal bits)
like i said before, these things are damn near weapons...
pretty weapons!!!
so that's just bout it,,, i'm going to give a a few brass dials a go to see if i like the look... but not sure yet,, i may think they look better with the contrast of the aluminum...and for the face plates i was thinking maybe stainless steel?? instead of carbon fiber... heck, not like i'm concerned about weight here... who knows... but i like the look of the stainless ball in there instead of brass... just too much brass... again, i don't know,, i'm up in the air on it...
k, so just getting back into the full swing of things. Batches will start back up next weekend. I have a few other BB thingies i'm going to start working on here shortly, and i'll update here when i get some thing to show on those fronts... I'v been spending a lot of time with the diver and making note on some tips that help the set up with the BB specifically, when i have some time i'll post that in the forum fraggboy and drunk set up... but i hear diver V2 is coming out soon and possibly i get one! Neat O! And yup, the BSD Condo is still working great with micro coil setup!!!
