The end of vaping? A reddit thread really scared me!

So I was stuck filling in for the receptionist at work yesterday and was browsing reddit. I found a thread on their e-cig area that talked about how soon it will be illegal to sell e-juice with flavorings and how all these ppl are stockpiling their juices in the freezer and how the only way to get juice is unflavored nicotine and how we wont be able to get any hardware from across the seas because the FDA will be running the show etc. Is this really a possibility? I felt like it was a bit hysterical but it started to make me nervous. vaping has helped me in so many ways! Not only with quitting smoking but its helping me cope with my anxiety (i like to play with all my setups at night, its my hobby now!) and it helps me be a better type 1 diabetic (when I have the urge to snack even though my blood sugars are in a perfect range and I really don't need to mess with them- now I vape!).

I would love some opinions from people who may have some insight on all of this!

I don't put anything past the powers that be to do what they want to do, regardless of the best interests of their constituents (not just WRT to vaping, either ;)). Instead of being a hoarder (but that's fun for me, too. JK, just got a healthy number of fabulous mech mods that will always work, forever, and I DIY juice), we should all be active in supporting vaping.

Dr. Farsalinos is a leading researcher in the area of vaping (see sticky at the top of General Forum). Also, if you're not already, take a moment to join CASAA (CASAA - The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association) and see if your state has a state level organization as well. Turn that fear into action and advocacy!

ETA: Oh, and STAY off reddit, lol. JK, do what you want, but they drive me nuts. I can't stand curse words and crass language. I can't understand the message with all that silly talk. I'm an old fuddy-duddy that way, lol!

I think chances are extremely slim that vaping will be outlawed. The FDA and other agencies know, much to their displeasure, that vaping has become too popular to simply ban. On the other hand, I believe it will become more difficult and more expensive, due to unreasonable regulations and taxes. I also have diabetes, and vaping also helps me keep my snacking in check. Its just a win-win-win for me. On the off chance that vaping is banned or severely curtailed, I'd have no problem with going on the black market. Failing that, I'll go back on analogs.

It MAY just be "The sky is falling!" per Chicken Little.
Or it may be a portent of things to come (g). The hobby of vaping is fighting against the pharmacy companies, the 'anti-cancer' organizations, governments who are scared of losing their cigarette/tobacco revenues, the media which likes money and will publish stories and biased 'findings' by those who pay them, public opinion about 'smoking' in general and to a lesser extent Big Tobacco which will want to monopolize the new market. Plus you always have control freaks who don't want you doing what they don't do.
Remember Aesop's Ant and Grasshopper fable. Prepare for a worst case scenario. Get a couple of good mods that you feel will keep working for years to come. Learn how to re-build coils (not hard to do at all unless you have very shaky hands), learn how to DIY juice. Essentially the only thing the government can control is nicotine. Stockpile nicotine solution. Keep it in a freezer (and away from kids and pets) and away from light and it should last close to indefinitely.

Yep, that article sounds a bit hysterical to me (but I still have nic stored in the freezer :D). I spoke to a major nicotine supplier at Vape Blast recently and he thought any future regulations would have to do with concentrations that can be sold and the facilities where juice is manufactured. Who knows what the FDA will do, so I just decided to stock up, learn to build, and make my own juice instead of worrying about it.

THis exactly.

I learned about possible threats to vaping a week after I started. I made a plan and have been executing it for the last year to prepare myself to be self sufficient for the rest of my life (it helps that I am old hehe).

rebuildables + mechs and knowing how to use them
DIY juice + dropping my nic level + some in the freezer

I am good to go come what may

I'm seeing it as a tug of war. I have no idea which side will win or if some type of compromise will be the norm in the future.

That said, I'm in the beginnings of mixing my own stuff. Not because of fear for the future of the availability of vapors but because of inconsistencies of the vapes at out local vape stores.

One shop had a root beer flavor that I thought was amazing. As it turned out, the bottles I bought were flavored using a sample bottle of root beer flavoring. Once the new flavoring was purchased and implemented by the store, the vape was clear and barely tasted like root beer. On the advice of another store I bought a small bottle of flavoring from Wal Mart, ended up adding 7 mils of my flavoring to each 30 mil bottle I'd purchased. It's much better root beer than any I've bought or tested anywhere and the flavor is strong enough to suit my preferences.

A cherry flavor I got samples of at the Dallas area Vape Blast is very good and again, much better than I've tried anywhere. What's the problem there? It's only available for wholesale purchase and not available locally or by internet providers.

I'm figuring that I'll just be a lot better off mixing my own, to my own tastes and along with all the help available at ECF I should be very successful. I didn't want to play with the chemistry but I feel as though I'm being forced in that direction.

I feel like if vaping was banned it would be very similar to the alcohol prohibition back in the day. Maybe not as severe, but I could certainly see underground vapers selling liquids and devices. It's simply too popular and growing too rapidly to ban. Not to mention so much better for you then cancer sticks!

I would fight for my right to vape any day.

The closest I get to buying pre-made e-liquid is buying pre-mixed flavor concentrates. That's one route that may become more popular if flavor regulations are put in place. Unflavored nicotine and the flavor mix for your favorite liquid sold separately.

I've gotten so lazy from mixing concentrates that I hardly do any real DIY any more. Costs a bit more, but I don't use nearly as much flavor as (what I think) most people like. Still way cheaper than buying pre-mixed liquids... and I never liked the pricing policy of 6mg liquids priced the same as 24mg liquids. Once you DIY, you realize the ridiculousness of this. It's the nicotine that costs money. The rest you get for change.

I'll start searching the other pages but where does one get really good quality ingredients for DIY? I've only been vaping for 9 weeks but think it's start to looking into it at least.

Lots of great vendors.

For flavors I go to The Perfumers Apprentice and Flavor West (Many like Wizard Lab but I have never used them).

PG/VG you can get many many places just make sure it is USP Food Grade - I usually get mine from THe Perfumers Apprentice for sheer convenience I am sure there is cheaper out there

For Nic I get mine at myfreedomsmokes.com It is bottled in glass and doesn't have an odd or overly peppery taste to me.

I keep a collection of great blog links at the bottom of my mediocre DIY blog:

Are you in in Beantown or burbs? ->PM me

EDIT - read the stickies in the DIY section before even ordering DIY gear.
They're full of important safety info and should be required reading for anyone considering DIY.

It's just going to be a lot more expensive. I made the switch to 0 this month knowing that vaping will eventually be something I'll lose interest in(hopefully).
Maybe that's not an option for everyone but for me it is. Vaping helped me quit smoking, RDA's and mechanical mods gave me a hobby I enjoyed to help keep my mind off of smokes. It's unfortunate that it's always about business and dollars as all of us can agree that vaping is allowing us to regain our lives. Personally I think we will always be able to vape but they're putting us in a corner like tobacco cigarettes. They'll tax us heavily and start regulating everything they can.
We are officially in the god old days. Next year things will be very different.

My opinion

Maybe its paranoia, maybe not. I can build a mod, mix my juice, and have pretty much gone to dripping. I have a four year supply of nic. Putting all this know how and self reliance into play came to be because of ECF and all the great folks here who so willingly share their hard earned knowledge. Being reliant on pre made juice and coils left me feeling like I had traded one master for another, albeit a less greedy one. If, actually WHEN the govmt. gets involved I expect prices to go up at the very least. Being self sufficient has given me a feeling of liberation.
My real hope is that vaping will come to be seen as a viable alternative smoking cessation method. It is the only thing that has worked for this 32+ year smoker...

Let's look at it logically. Cigarettes are a known hazard to your health. There are no known health issues with vaping. Cigarettes are yet to be outlawed and I don't see anyone freaking out about it predicting they will be. Draw your own conclusions based on that.
