Being a former Marine myself (remember, there are no ex-Marines), I have to say that I’m disappointed in the direction that the Marine Corps has decided to take regarding their treatment of E-cigarettes and Vapers. Essentially, the Marines have gone even further that the rest of the government as far as lumping vapers and smokers into the same category is concerned.

Using a base order released by the Commanding Officer of Camp Lejeune, NC, which is directed to those Marines and other servicemen/women stationed therein, as a standard for the Marine’s overall attitude towards E-cigarettes, we can see that they are systematically denying reality and attempting to remain politically correct and “health-oriented” as is popular in the media nowadays. First, their statement that the best methods for breaking one’s self of the tobacco habit are smoking cessation and readily available “professional assistance.” This ignores several established scientific studies that show that vaping is, in fact, the best method of quitting smoking.

The order continually refers to the “smoking” of E-cigarettes, which shows that the upper echelon of Camp Lejeune didn’t even bother to do the barest, most elementary research into the topic… enough to know that E-cigarettes are not “smoked” at all. The directive also establishes educational programs (which only actually serve to stand between a Marine and their first beer of the evening) to educate Marines about the “dangers of tobacco replacement devices.” Well, if they would go so far as to attempt a five-minute Google search... (Click here to read the rest of my article.)

I may get flamed for this, but......

As a discharged Marine myself I feel your pain, I feel it is our right to Vape, I also know that any new rule will not keep a Marine from Vaping.

What will keep a Marine from vaping is the lack of electricity to power a battery, no way to get juice, not able to clean heads and rebuild coils. Im talking about a real Marine here, not a remington raider or the like. I also dont think a deployed Marine is much use while having a nicotine fit.

Im talking about a Marine in a line battalion if they still call them that..you know...a Grunt...a ground Pounder...those of us that got saddled up out of LeJune to go in 24 hours out of Morehead city in the middle of the night. Cigarettes were easy and convenient, vaping...not so easy or convenient.

Before you get to flaming me, the Marine Corps CAUSED my smoking habit. 17 years old, didnt smoke, and every day towards the end of that 12 week boot camp I was faced with the choice of "go to the head and scrub the floors or squad bay floors... IF your not going out while the smoking lamp is lit"...guess what, I chose to start smoking instead of getting on my knees and scrub toilets. There were also cigs in all the C rations back in the day. They made it easy.

Cigs got many a Marine and Army soldier shot and killed due to the smell of tobacco and the sight of a fire ball or match lighting up/glowing. Hell, there were entire platoons that got smoked.....due to cigs. It happened in WW1, WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, etc.... No sir, Cigs have no place in the real Marine Corps. And in my opinion, either do Vaping equiptment and supplies. They would get in the way and not be condusive to doing your job.

They only allow slightly over 200 thousand folks in the Marine Corps. Just make one of the NEW requirements that the person joining be a non smoker.

My opinion as a 37 year smoker and former Marine

I knew things in the marines was becoming "PC" when they went all stupid on the tattoo thing
I knew a girl they wouldn't let in because she had a tattoo of a butterfly on her neck behind her left ear...she burned it off with a beltsander!!! Still wouldn't take her...

too hard core for the marines, now that's a tattoo to replace the one she removed!

It would seem that the Marines are next on the list for having ecigs expressly and implicitly restricted, in writing, like the Air Force has been. Once again, these people in charge think that ecigs are bad for you, when they actually reduce the damage we did to ourselves by smoking.

FAFB doesn't stand for Fairchild Air Force Base, in this specific instance.

When is the next election cycle again? I see some stupid that needs to be thrown out of office.... many offices.

Oh, while they are at it, alcohol needs to be banned on base at the same time. Leads to drunk driving, alcohol related incidents (fights and disorderly conduct), sexual harassment and or assaults, and unprofessional behavior all around, among other things.

Oh, ban the fast food joints on base also, as they lead to obesity and poor eating habits. Makes Marines and Airmen fat and unhealthy. High blood pressure and such.

My war was Viet-Nam ... "Smoke 'em if ya got 'em"
Far from the "Politically Correct" military today.

Isn't it a shame that you can identify yourself by the war that the US was involved in when when you served. Father and uncle WWII, oher uncle, Korea and I VN. Will we ever get to the point that those that serve our country will identify with the branch of the Pease Corp they served in?

Every generation seems to be defined by its music
and sadly ... by its war.

That sounds like right-wing PC not left-wing PC. Either way, it's intolerance.

I had thought the US armed forces were the best in the world (possibly barring the Israelis) BECAUSE although obedience is required, being an automaton or clone is not.

I have sleeves and they wouldn't even look twice at me. Garbage, an able bodied, non-violent American wants to serve his country and they turn you down. Laughable.

Military is a joke now days, hate to say it.
When I was in 92-98, before they went all psycho on the anti-tattoo kick..my platoon Sergeant had sleeves on both sides...most hard charging guy I ever knew, now if you have those tats the marines wouldn't take him...go figure

Quote for truth:
"When I joined the military it was illegal to be homosexual, then it became optional and now it's legal. I'm getting out before Obama makes it mandatory."

I'm so fricken glad I'm retired !!
The freedom of association is incredible !!

I remember the last day of work.
Management told me I wasn't allowed to vape.
I replied ... Yesterday was my last day there ...
I'm taking early retirement TODAY!!

The last they ever saw of me was
the bottom of my shoes walking out the door !!
:p

Edit
I didn't walk out just because of the vaping thing ...
I was fed up to the gills with their B.S. in general.
