... or the Big Screen on the wall.
As a Netflix customer I get discs in every week or so. Just thought I'd see if anyone on the ECF wants to discuss movies.
NO SPOILERS, PLEASE !
I should be getting Marvel Studios movie 'Doctor Strange' in tomorrow. After some very average movies like 'Criminal' (Kevin Costner, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Gal Gadot) and Suicide Squad (Will Smith, Margo Robbie, Viola Davis, Ben Affleck) I am hoping for a film that actually delivers.

I have to ask ; did you see it in 3D IMAX or a regular screen ?
I watched it at home.. I can't afford movie theaters, lol. Borrowed it from a friend. But it looks really good on my 23" in Computer monitor. :)
I wish I could've seen it on the big screen though, would've been very enjoyable.

If you want to talk classics, I'm your man!
Don't know much about those made since the 1970s though. I just don't find most of them interesting.

When 'The Bourne Identity' first came out, my son kept telling me "You should go see it, Pops. It's a lot like the old movies." Meaning - No big chase scene or series of explosions to start with, just Matt Damon getting found at sea and trying to piece together his life from there. Even the people Hollywood is targeting can see through the crap.
Meanwhile, Stallone and DeNiro and Freeman just keep rolling along...

I like explosions and chase scenes as much as the next guy (White Heat and Bullitt come to mind). I just want movies that are more than that.

It just seems to me most movies today are gosh-wow (explosions, sfx, etc.), touchy-feely (DeNiro's recent ones), or uninspired dumbness. The exceptions are often great, but they're increasingly rare.

Why can't they make movies with real stories, like Mystery of the Leaping Fish (1916), jewel Robbery (1932), or Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)?

I saw Doctor Strange in 3D in the theaters, on an international flight, and on DVD rental at home. I guess you can infer that I liked it since I've seen it three times. The effects are pretty cool, I liked the story (I used to collect Marvel comics), and it doesn't take much to keep me entertained.

I watched Robert Altman’s Short Cuts last weekend. It was the third time I’d seen it, but the first time for my kids, (ages 14 and 17). Interestingly, despite the mature themes, tangled story lines, and staccato pacing, my 14 year-old enjoyed it more than her older brother. Altman is renowned for making very actor-friendly films, giving them freedom to showcase their abilities, and Short Cuts features an ensemble cast of at least 20-some-odd familiar names and faces.

It’s a twisting, multi-layered, “slice of Los Angeles life” picture, that shows the two or three degrees of separation between many of these otherwise seemingly unrelated characters, most of whom are in unhealthy relationships of one sort or another. With top-notch cinematography, direction, storytelling, and acting, I consider Short Cuts to be an excellent addition to my movie collection. Added bonus: the Blu-ray release looks gorgeous.
