How are the soda police going to be able to tell a no-sugar diet soft drink from the sugar laden one? It's got to be easier to tell an e-cigarette from a lighted tobacco cigarette. At least when you get close some of the differences become apparent. But diet drinks are visually identical to those containing sugar.

So the next thing we will hear is that NO sodas can be served in a cup larger than 16 oz so that the poor enforcement folks don't get confused. So even if you decided to improve your health by switching away from sugar-laden sodas, you will still be paying the same penalty as a sugar-drinker. Sound familiar?

Petrodus, where do you find these cartoons? They're a hoot!
Ha-ha ... Google "Advanced" Image Search
I'm retired and so I have enough free time now to get into trouble
:p

I do enjoy doing "refined" searches and never ever use the "basic" search engines.
Google (advanced) text search: Link

In "the other world" I do a lot of searches looking for references.
Its surprising how much is out there.

Many are aware of the following ... Just adding it to the post for those
who might find the information of interest

Whats really interesting is Google, for some unknown reason, HIDES the Advanced
search engine options ... You don't see their excellent advanced search engine
links on their basic search page. I guess its primarily because advanced (refined)
searches confuses the average surfer. However, once you use them for a while
most will not go back to the simple searches.

Google Advanced "Scholar" search: Link
Google Advanced "Book" search: Link

Just for fun: Here is a link for Advanced Searches for the ECF
Search ONLY the ECF: Link
Lets say I remember I posted something about George Carlin and didn't book mark it
So ... I would enter Petrodus in "all the words" (top box)
then in the 2nd box (exact phrase) I would enter George Carlin ... Link

Of course on the left side of the screen (scrolling down) ya see
"Show Search Tools" ... clicking on that will open reveal even more options.

The ECF has an advanced search available ... top of page
I just stick with Google because all is familiar

PS: Google "basic" simple search ...
Entering Electronic cigarettes
Tells Google to show you webpages with the following
Electronic cigarettes
Or
Electronic
or
Cigarettes

And it wouldn't surprise me if research eventually shows that diet sodas are much more harmful to your health than those with sugar.

In that case, I should be dead by now. In one more year, I will have been drinking diet cola as many years as I smoked (45).

You might consider switching because there is a good deal of research showing that diet sodas increase your appetite. That's because it fools your brain into thinking there will be some calories coming soon when you get that sweet taste in your mouth. When they fail to show up your brain starts signaling the body to find those missing calories. Plus, phenylalanine makes you stupid. I have friends that did some research to that effect years ago (academic lab), but their results were supressed by the corporations. Since it was just a side project they didn't pursue the research. The other chemical commonly found in sodas is sodium benzoate. It's probably okay, but if you mix that with fruit juice you get benzene, which is highly toxic. A few years back they had to remove a lot of products that had carbonated water with fruit juice because benzene formed right in the bottle before you even ingested it.

Apparently there is a genetic component to the issue of cognitive skills and phenylalanine. See: Phenylalanine in diet soda: Is it harmful? - MayoClinic.com

It turns out that my brain is correct when it gets the message that some calories are coming. I drink a 12-oz can (Nanny Bloomberg would approve) with my lunch. I'll have to do some experimentation to see if I consume any fewer calories if I drink water instead of the cola. The only problem is that without the mid-day infusion of caffeine I tend to get groggy in the afternoon. That isn't as much a problem as it was before I retired.

You know something, I have been on the receiving end of ridicule when I'm seen ordering a diet drink and have anything at all in my meal that could be fattening. The question they ask is, "If you're eating all those other calories, why bother with a diet drink?" The answer is that drinking a 300-calorie soda on top of those other calories is like squirting lighter fluid on a fire to make it go out.

At least if I stick to the diet soda, I'm not gaining the extra pound every 11.67 days that I would be if I drank a sugar soda.
(That's working on the theory that 3500 extra calories = a pound of fat gained.)

I switched to diet soda back when the only diet cola was Tab (and that tastes awful!). The reason I switched was because after 3 months of being cooped up alone in an apartment with nothing to do and nobody to talk to, I put on an extra 30 pounds without realizing it. When I finally did realize that I had become fat, I figured out that the source of the weight gain had to be the 4 cans of regular cola I had been drinking every day during that period.

Elaine- what we're fighting for is freedom of choice (which has been dwindling in this country over the past few years). I say if your choice is to drink a diet drink you should be able to do it (or one with sugar if that's your preference) in any size you want. It's the same as vaping to me- if I want to vape a liter bottle tied to my back of e-juice with a car battery to power my PV, I should be able to do that!!! The restrictions of "smaller measls," "smaller drinks," and smaller e-cigs should not be- Yes, education about what they are and what they give you is important, but Personal Choice is still the most important factor, especially when these choices impact no one else.
